W&L's Hall Wins Callaway Gardens Women's Intercollegiate

FOREST, Va. --- Washington and Lee University standout Mary-Frances Hall is quickly making a name for herself in NCAA Division III women's golf.  The Generals' freshman won for the second time in her rookie campaign, besting the field at the Callaway Gardens Intercollegiate, hosted by Berry College at the Lake View Course in Pine Mountain, Ga.

The tournament included three of the top-20 teams in the country, as ranked by Golfstat. That includes Washington and Lee, which moved to #10 in the rankings by placed second overall.  Hungtingdon College, which finished eighth, is ranked 18th, while 20th-rated Methodist University tied for fourth.

Hall, from State Road, N.C., opened with a 3-over-par 74 to sit second after the first 18 holes on the 5,808-yard par-71 layout.  She posted a 4-over 75 on day two, which provided her a three-shot cushion on the way to a 36-hole 7-over 149.  In five starts this year -- this being her first in the spring -- Hall has placed in the top-10 four times and won twice, adding this week's victory to a triumph at the ODAC Preview to open the fall season.

The Generals fired a 313 on day one, giving them a four-stroke lead heading into the second round.  Their team scored only increased by 10 shots to 323, but that was enough to allow Dalton State to slide in and take the team title by two strokes over W&L.

Fellow first year players Liza Freed and Caroline Holloway also placed in the top-10 for the Generals.  Freed posted rounds of 75 and 82 to finish 15-over, while Holloway flipped her teammates performance, carding rounds of 82 and 75 on the way to tying Freed for ninth.  Rachael Wright followed up an opening round 82 with a 93 to finished at 175 for her two rounds, while Sara Moir rounded out the Generals' contingent with a two-day 183 (92-91).
