Guilford Finishes Eighth at NCAA Men's Golf Championships

Hampden-Sydney's Burt Earns Second All-American Honor

GREENSBORO, N.C. --- Tournament co-host Guilford College shot a 301 on Friday to occupy solo eighth place at the 2015 NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championships.  The Quakers finished with a four-round 1,195 at 43-over-par, 22 strokes behind champion Methodist University.

Quakers sophomore Ty Palmer was the top ODAC finisher, tying for fifth with Schreiner University's Jimmy Keener at even-par 288 after 72 holes on the East and West Courses at the Grandover Resort in Greensboro, N.C.  Hampden-Sydney College senior Brian Burt placed 12th at 12-over par, while also earning a First Team nod as a Division III Ping All-American.  Kelby Scharmann from the University of La Verne claimed the individual crown with a nine-under-par 279 (66-75-68-70).

For the Quakers, the eighth place finish (294-297-303-301) marked Guilford's best NCAA Tournament effort since 2010 and its 10th top-10 result in 21 appearances. Sophomore Ty Palmer carded a one-under 71, combining that with a 71 in round one, a 77 in round two and three-under 69 on day three.  Classmate Tanner Gross shot 75 and nabbed a piece of 18th place at 294 (72-74-73-75). Quakers' senior and ODAC Golfer of the Year, Drew Thompson, shot 77 in his final college round and shared 26th place with 297 (71-69-80-77).

Harrison Frye (81-80-81-78) and Henry Smith (80-77-85-80) rounded out Guilford's five-man lineup.

Burt, a two-time All-American, capped out the tournament with a 77 (+5) to finish the tournament four over par with a total score of 292. He was in the top five for the first three days and shot his best round of 68 in the opening round. He was two over par on day two, and after advancing with the top 81 performers, shot a 73 (+1) in the third round.
