LYNCHBURG, Va. --- The Lynchburg College athletic department announced the hiring of Jon Howard Tuesday as the new head men's golf coach. Former head coach Chip Walton stepped away from the program after four seasons to assume the role of Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Services at the College.
Howard comes to LC after four years of Division III golf experience at Christopher Newport University. He was named a co-captain in the 2012-13 season and earned the captain's role in the 2013-14 campaign. Howard was named the Capital Athletic Conference's (CAC) Player of the Year as a senior and led the Captains to the CAC team title. Howard graduated from CNU in December of 2014 with a degree in history.
"Jonathan Howard played a major foundational role in my program," said Christopher Newport University head golf coach Jamie Coleman. "He is a fine young man loaded with talent and character, which is hard to find. Jon has always been a leader both on and off the course, and I believe he will be very successful in the years ahead at Lynchburg."
Howard assisted coach Coleman at CNU with many aspects of the program, including coordinating practices and qualifying rounds, showing recruits around campus and creating numerous publications for the conference golf tournament.
"We are excited for Chip Walton to be able to take over as the dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, but sad that it takes him away from his ability to continue growing our golf program," said LC Director of Athletics Jon Waters. "In hiring Jon Howard, we know that we have someone that understands the level of hard work and effort that is necessary to be successful as a collegiate golfer. While inexperienced as a head coach, his leadership experiences as an undergrad were extensive and his understanding of student engagement and excellence will put him in a great position to lead our golf program moving forward."
