Roanoke Tabs Spellane to Lead Maroons Golf Program

SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke College Director of Athletics Scott Allison announced Wednesday the hiring of Brian Spellane '00 as the Maroons new Head Golf Coach.

Spellane, who graduated from Roanoke in 2000 with a degree in sociology, was a member of the Maroon golf team and following his graduation became a fixture in the Massachusetts golf community.

"We're excited to have Brian join our team of coaches," said Allison. "Brian's preparation for our golf coach position includes an intercollegiate playing background, country club experience, and a significant stint in corporate sales.  Mix that preparation with a clear passion for all things Roanoke College, we feel we have a guy that has what it takes to elevate our golf program."

Spellane spent five years as the First Assistant Golf Professional at Worcester Country Club in Worcester, Mass., under PGA Professional Allan Belden. At WCC, Spellane was involved in all aspects of the day-to-day operations of the club that serves over 600 members. In addition to on the course teaching, Spellane worked on promoting club events, golf schools and directed the junior golf program.

Prior to his time at Worcester Country Club, Spellane served as an Assistant Golf Professional at Tatnuck Country Club under the tutelage of PGA Master Professional Jack Gale. Spellane grew up on the course at Tatnuck, serving as a caddy and earned the prestigious Francis Ouimet Scholarship.

"I am extremely excited and honored to be named the head coach of the Roanoke College golf team and can't thank President Maxey, Dean Fetrow and Scott Allison enough for this opportunity," said Spellane.  Words can't describe how happy I am to be returning Roanoke to be able to work with these student-athletes to help them reach their full potential on the golf course, in the classroom and prepare them for the next stage of their lives."

Spellane has been a part of the Roanoke College family since his older brother Bob enrolled at the College in fall of 1988. The elder Spellane was a member of the golf team as well, winning individual medalist honors at the prestigious Virginia Intercollegiate Tournament as a senior in 1992. Bob's son Robert just completed his freshman year at RC.

Outside of golf Spellane has been involved in cooperate sales for private companies in Massachusetts since 2007, including the last two years as Business Development Director for Zensar Technologies.
