Lynchburg Tabs Veverka to Lead Men's Golf Program

LYNCHBURG, Va. --- The Lynchburg College athletic department and athletic director Jon Waters are excited to announce that Michael Veverka will join the Hornets' team as head golf coach.

Veverka comes to Lynchburg from Georgia Southern University, where he has spent the past two years as the PGA assistant professional at the GSU golf course in Statesboro, Ga. At Georgia Southern, Veverka led a staff of 30 student employees, oversaw the course's marketing operations along with golf instruction.

The Brunswick, Md., native also graduated from GSU with a masters degree in education. He said he is excited to put his education background to use.

"I was presented so many opportunities by my coaches in the past that I figured it's time I start giving back," he said.

Veverka is a 2014 alumnus of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, where he competed for the Hawks' golf team and served as a team captain.

"We are thankful to be able to add someone as talented as Michael to our staff to lead our golf program," Waters said. "His commitment to excellence in the classroom during his own undergraduate and graduate work demonstrate his commitment and understanding of what it takes to be a scholar-athlete. We look forward to the impact that he will make on our student-athletes."

Veverka comes to Lynchburg already familiar with the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. In the 2014-15 season, he served as a volunteer assistant for the Bridgewater College women's golf team while also working as the assistant pro at Lakeview Golf Club in Harrisonburg, Va.

"My time coaching previously in Division III was kind of an eye-opening experience," Veverka said. "I think the student-athletes can really focus on the whole experience of going to college rather than just on their sport."

His prior experience includes PGA internships at The Hollows Golf Club in Montpelier, Va., Norbeck Country Club in Olney, Md., and Maryland National Golf Club in Middletown, Md.

Veverka will assume his role on campus this week.
