LYNCHBURG, Va. --- The University of Lynchburg athletic department and director of athletics Jon Waters are pleased to announce the addition of women's golf to the Hornets' sponsored sport offerings, beginning in the 2019-20 academic year.
Women's golf becomes the 22nd varsity intercollegiate athletic program sponsored by Lynchburg and the 10th program in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.
Lynchburg sponsored women's golf in 1967 and 1968 but has not offered the sport since.
Second-year head men's golf coach Michael Veverka has been promoted to director of men's and women's golf, effective immediately. The department will add a graduate assistant position as well.
"Lynchburg has a storied history as a premier academic and athletic destination for high level student-athletes," Waters said. "Adding women's golf to our offerings will attract focused female scholar-athletes who want to elevate their game under the direction of a talented coach and mentor like Coach Veverka."
Under Veverka, the men's golf team posted its lowest-ever single round team score, two-day tournament score, and best Golfstat national ranking in 2018.
"I am thrilled about the addition of women's golf here at Lynchburg!" Veverka said. "It is a natural fit for the institution and our athletic department, and I think the women's program will be able to come in and grow right away."
Like the Hornet men's program, the women's team will make Poplar Grove Golf Club in nearby Amherst, Va., its home course. Legendary golfer Sam Snead's final course design, Poplar Grove is a championship-level course set on an historic Colonial-era manor about 25 minutes from the Lynchburg campus.
The teams will also continue to train on campus at Lynchburg's indoor and outdoor golf facilities.
"We are blessed to have excellent indoor, on-campus, and golf course facilities here at Lynchburg," Veverka said. "We are extremely excited to get the women's program started and hit the recruiting trail right away!"
Upon the program's launch, the Hornets will compete with Bridgewater, Eastern Mennonite, Emory & Henry, Hollins, Randolph-Macon, Shenandoah, Sweet Briar, Washington and Lee, and Virginia Wesleyan in the ODAC.
