2020-21 ODAC Golf News


May 14, 2021
The Guilford golf team finished up the 2021 NCAA Division III Championship in third place when play drew to a close at the Oglebay Resort & Conference Center in Wheeling, West Virginia on Friday afternoon. The Quakers finished 47-over-par with a combined score of 1179 (302-286-295-296). Guilford finished 24 shots off the pace established by team champion Illinois Wesleyan (+23, 1155) and 11 strokes behind Methodist, which finished second with a 36-over-par score of 1168.

The Washington and Lee women's golf team finished in a tie for ninth-place at the NCAA Division III Championship at the Forest Akers Golf Club West Course in East Lansing, Mich.

ODAC champion Guilford College collected a league-best five all-conference honors in addition to two special individual accolades to headline the 2021 All-ODAC Men's Golf Awards. That haul includes a third straight ODAC Golfer of the Year plaque for Guilford's James Mishoe. Quakers' mentor Adam Crawford picked up his first Jack Jensen Coach of the Year award from his peers. Hampden-Sydney College's Meade Slonaker took home ODAC Rookie of the Year laurels, while Tigers teammate Allen Smith was tabbed the ODAC/Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete by the league's athletic communications personnel. Bridgewater College's Ronnie Uszenski garnered Ted Keller Sportsman of the Year plaudits.

Washington and Lee University earned three major individual honors and Generals occupied a league-best four all-conference positions to headline the 2019-20 All-ODAC Women's Golf Awards. W&L first-year standout Megan Kanaby was tabbed the ODAC Golfer of the Year, while teammate Beth Ann Townsend earned her second straight ODAC/Virginia Farm Bureau Insurances Scholar-Athlete of the Year laurel. Generals first-year head coach Kelsie Carralero garnered ODAC Coach of the Year accolades. University of Lynchburg first-year Lily Self received ODAC Rookie of the Year recognition, while Bridgewater College senior Jesse Bartley was selected as the ODAC Sportswoman of the Year.

Eastern Mennonite University has announced the hiring of Andre Swartzentruber as the new Head Golf Coach. He has been a golf coach and mathematics teacher at nearby Spotswood High School the past five years.

Guilford College placed third at the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championships Friday at the Keene Trace Golf Club. The Quakers shot 299 in the fourth and final round to finish with a 72-hole score of 1,181, seven strokes behind national champion Illinois Wesleyan University.

The 17th-ranked Washington and Lee women's golf team finished in a tie for 11th-place out of 25 teams at the NCAA Division III Championship held at the Bay Oaks Country Club in Houston, Texas.

There are three reasons to celebrate ODAC men's golf as a pair of conference teams earned top five honors and a conference student-athlete is a national individual golf champion for the third straight year.

For the third time in the last five years, Guilford College will perform double-duty at the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championships. This season, however, the Quakers have some extra ODAC support. Guilford College and Washington and Lee University both open play on Tuesday as full teams in the national championship event at Grandover Resort in Greensboro, N.C. Guilford, in association with the Greensboro Sports Commission, will also serve as hosts for the four-day event. The pair combined efforts for the same championship in 2014 and 2015.

The ODAC women's golf contingent did have quite as much success at Mission Inn Resort & Golf Club in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla., this week as they did at Bay Oaks Country Club in Houston, Texas, last year, but any time you finish a campaign playing among the NCAA Division III's best at a national championship, you chalk that up as a good season.

Guilford College men's golf coach Justin Tereshko won the 57th North Carolina Amateur Championship Sunday at the River Run Country Club. The Quakers' fourth-year mentor entered the Sunday's fourth and final round with a three-stroke lead over Lansdon Robbins and maintained the margin with a one-over 73 Sunday.

Bridgewater College women's golfer Christina Herbert and Virginia Wesleyan University softball pitcher Hanna Hull both earned nominations for the Division III Woman Athlete of the Year award as announced by Executive Director Chris Voelz of The Collegiate Women Sports Awards (CWSA) presented by Honda.

Wittenberg University staged a late rally and edged Guilford College by two strokes, 1,180-1,182, to win the 2017 NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championship Friday at the Mission Inn Resort and Club.

Roanoke College Director of Athletics Scott Allison announced Wednesday the hiring of Brian Spellane '00 as the Maroons new Head Golf Coach. Spellane, who graduated from Roanoke in 2000 with a degree in sociology, was a member of the Maroon golf team and following his graduation became a fixture in the Massachusetts golf community.

Virginia Wesleyan College sophomore Evan Cox highlighted a banner week for ODAC golfers at the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championships in Rochester, N.Y. Cox tied with two other players at 8-over par to force a three-golfer playoff. The ODAC Golfer of the Year birdied the eighth hole at Midvale Country Club to win the playoff and become the Marlins first men's golf national champion.

The 2016 NCAA Division III Women's Golf Championships saw the final round washed out halfway thru competition as heavy rains forced an early conclusion to play. Final scores reverted back to those of after the third round for all players. Washington and Lee University's Liza Freed posted the top score of the ODAC's trio, tying for 18th overall.

The Old Dominion Athletic Conference is pleased to announce the 2014-15 ODAC Sportsmanship Teams in each of the 17 winter and spring sports sponsored by the conference. This marks the sixth year the league has recognized these fine student-athletes for their excellence in sportsmanship.

The Lynchburg College athletic department announced the hiring of Jon Howard Tuesday as the new head men's golf coach. Former head coach Chip Walton stepped away from the program after four seasons to assume the role of Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Services at the College.

Tournament co-host Guilford College shot a 301 on Friday to occupy solo eighth place at the 2015 NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championships. The Quakers finished with a four-round 1,195 at 43-over-par, 22 strokes behind champion Methodist University.

Tanner Gross of Guilford College has been named recipient of the Phil Mickelson Outstandng Freshman Award presented by the Phil and Amy Mickelson Foundation as the most outstanding freshman in Division III men’s golf. Gross is the first Quaker and ODAC student-athlete to win the honor.

Hampden-Sydney College junior Brian Burt completed the 2014 NCAA Division III Golf Championships in fifth place at 3-over par (291). He played 22 holes on Friday as weather forced the suspension of action on Thursday, requiring many players to finish their third rounds before jumping into the final round at the Grandover Resort and Conference Center in Greensboro, N.C.

Hampden-Sydney College junior Brian Burt led by one stroke following the first round of play at the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championships. By the end of day two, his advantage grew to four shots as he fired a three-under par 69 to stand atop the 210-competitor field at Grandover Resort in Greensboro, N.C.

Noah Ratner wrapped up his brilliant Guilford College career Friday with a 12-place finish at the NCAA Division III Golf Championships at the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort. Ratner shot a two-over-par 73 in his final college round to finish with a four-round score of 293.

Friday marked the final round of the 2013 NCAA DIII Golf National Championships. Elizabeth Cheng (Virginia Beach, VA) represented herself, Hollins and the ODAC very well with a 12th place finish in the four day event after posting a total of 314. The four day event was held on the Baytowne Golf Club at the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort in Destin, Fla.

Gulford College shot 305 on Wednesday afternoon in the second round of the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championships. Combined with their first round total of 307, the Quakers ranked 17th out of 41 teams, missing the 15-team cut line. Noah Ratner won a five-man playoff for the final individual spot heading into the weekend.

Guilford's Noah Ratner was one of 24 students named to the 2012 All-Nicklaus Team, presented by the Golf Coaches Association of America to the nation's top golfers. He joins former teammate Peter Latimer '10 as GC selections to the annual all-star team comprised of golfers from NCAA Division I, Division II, Division III, the NAIA and the NJCAA.

Virginia Wesleyan golf welcomes Bryan Hearn as its new head coach leading into the 2012-13 academic year. Hearn, a graduate of Old Dominion University, has been a golf pro in the Hampton Roads area for the last six years. He'll be charged with rebuilding a program that returns just two players from the 2011-12 season.

A pair of Maroons earned the conference's top awards in a vote of the ODAC Board of Directors at the annual league meetings last week. Roanoke College women's track athlete Sarah Witt was recognized as the Marge Berkley Award winner, while golfer Brandon Ketron was tabbed the winner of the Doc Jopson Award.

Guilford College finished in ninth place at the 2011 NCAA Division III Golf Championships, marking the program's second straight impressive showing in the national tournament. Noah Ratner (pictured) was GC's top individual as he finished 11th at 292, making him a First Team All-American.

The NCAA Divsioin III Golf Championships field is set with the announcement of the at-large teams and individuals joining the 28 automatic qualifiers. Grandover Resort in Greensboro, N.C., will lends its East and West courses to a field of 205 golfers, including Guilford College and Bridgewater College's Mike Redwood.

For the first time in the 42-year history of the VWC golf program, the Marlins will be mentored by a veteran member of the PGA. Phil Stewart comes to the VWC program after serving as the Head Golf Professional at several Va. Beach area courses, including Red Wing Lake, Bow Creek, Stumpy Lake, and Kempsville Greens.

Guilford started the final round of the NCAA Division III Golf Championships 11 strokes back of leader Methodist, but by the end of the day, the Quakers were within striking distance. Their push fell one shot short of a full comeback as GC shot the round of day and tournament with a four-under-par 283.

Guilford's men's golf team retained third place after Thursday’s third round of the 37-team NCAA D-III Championships. The Quakers shot 295, their lowest round of the tournament, but slipped 11 strokes behind top-ranked Methodist University (307-290-287-884), which shot 287 and opened a five-shot edge over second-place Huntingdon College (309-290-290-889).

Guilford's men's golf team shot 297 Wednesday and climbed two spots into third place after the second of four rounds at the 37-team NCAA Division III Golf Championships. The Quakers trail leader Methodist University (307-290-597) by three strokes. Bridgewater missed the cut by five strokes, but the Eagles' Travis Gahman will continue as an individual.

The Washington and Lee golf team shot a final round score of 316 (303-302-311-316--1232) to finish 17th out of 36 teams at the NCAA Division III Championship held at the PGA Village on Saturday afternoon.

Guilford collected three major 2009 ODAC Golf awards after finishing second overall at the ODAC Championship in Cape Charles, Va. last weekend. Peter Latimer collected Player of the Year honors, Brian Creghan was honored as the ODAC/Farm Bureau Scholar-Athlete and Quaker head coach, Jack Jensen, was named Coach of the Year.

Washington and Lee shot the best team round of the tournament on Monday afternoon as the Generals gained 11 strokes on round two leader Guilford to overtake the Quakers for the 2009 ODAC Championship. Guilford's Peter Latimer fired his second straight round of 76 to win individual honors.

The Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) has announced that Washington and Lee senior Nathaniel James (Keller,Texas/Keller) is the 2008 recipient of the Byron Nelson Award, which is presented by Cleveland Golf in conjunction with the Four Seasons Resort and Club Las Colinas, the Salesmanship Club of Dallas and Friends of Golf.

The Washington and Lee University golf team has completed two rounds of the 2008 NCAA Division III Golf Championships that is being held in Braselton, Ga. at the Chateau Elan Resort.

Washington and Lee University held on through erratic weather at Poplar Grove Golf Club to win the 2008 ODAC Golf Championships. The victory marks the 11th overall league title for the Generals’ program and earns the squad the conference’s automatic bid into the national tournament at Chateau Elan Resort in Braselton, Georgia.
