Irby, a senior from Clover, Va., put together a strong week thru a pair of events for the Hornets. Irby opened by tying for fourth at the Lynchburg Invitational. He opened with a 3-over 75 on the par-72 track set to 7,009 yards at Poplar Grove Golf Club. He followed with a 2-over 74 to finish three shots off the pace at 5-over 149. His efforts helped Lynchburg to fourth in the team standings at 45-over 621 (305-316). Irby then participated in all four of Lynchburg's matches at the Division III Match Play Invitational. Irby went 3-1 for the event, including a triumph over top-rated (by Golfstat.com) James Mishoe from Guilford, 3&2, in the first round. After falling in the quarterfinal round to Hampden-Sydney's Parker Smith, Irby rebounded for a 1-up win over Chris Harris from Rhodes. He finished with a 3&2 win over David Dattilo from Mt. St. Joseph. Irby's efforts helped Lynchburg go 2-2 as a team in the largest recorded college match play event. The Hornets fell to Guilford (3-2-0) in the first round and Hampden-Sydney (4-1-0) in round two, but recovered for wins over Rhodes (3-2-0) and Mt. St. Joe's (5-0-0) in the final two rounds.
Men's Golf Weekly Honor Roll
Harrison Frye, GC: Frye went 3-0 at the Division III Match Play Invitational, capturing 20 holes overall and helping Guilford to third place behind Hope College and Texas-Tyler. Frye opened with a 2-up victory over Lynchburg's Carter Old in the first round. After sitting out the quarterfinals, Frye came back for a 3&1 win over Hope's Andrew Goble. In the final round, Frye defeated Austin Coble from Greensboro, 3&1. Guilford defeated Lynchburg (3-2-0) and Webster (3-2-0) before falling to Hope (3-1-1) in the semifinals. The Quakers finished with a win over Greensboro (3-2-0).
