HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. --- The ODAC split
the ODAC-USA South Senior All-Star Basketball Games last weekend at
Hampden-Sydney College, marking the third straight year the teams
had each won a contest. The ODAC women evened their record at
2-2 with a 79-67 win, marking their first victory in the series
since the inaugural event in 2006. The ODAC men suffered
their first loss in four tries, this one coming in overtime via an
88-87 result.
With Hampden-Sydney being an all male institution, it is also
believed that the game between the two conferences' female stars
was the first women's game in Fleet Gymnasium.
Roanoke's Erin Jenkins led three ODAC women in double figures with
13 points to go with seven rebounds and three assists.
Jennifer Saunders (Bridgewater) added 12 points and seven boards
while Jill Weston (Virginia Wesleyan) chipped in 10 markers.
Andrea Ushinski (Virginia Wesleyan) recorded nine points with team
highs of eight rebounds and four assists.
The USA South's Dione Eccles (Greensboro) posted a double-double
with game-highs of 19 points, 14 rebounds and five assists to go
with four steals. She hit five three-pointers. Miranda
Carrasco (Ferrum) had 13 points, hitting three from
long-distance.
Curtis Peery (Roanoke) led the ODAC men with 12 points and 10
rebounds, the latter marking a game-high. Rob Rice
(Bridgewater) notched 11 points on 3-of-5 shooting from beyond the
arc. LeRoger Parrish (Eastern Mennonite) also scored 11
points, hitting 5-of-8 shots from the field.
Thomas Whinnett (Christopher Newport) led all scorers with 16
points to go with seven rebounds. Adam Coleman (N.C.
Wesleyan) added 15 points while Ryan Frazier (Averett) scored 11
points.
Inaugurated in 2006, the ODAC/USA South Senior Basketball All-Star
Challenge provides graduating seniors from each of the conferences'
schools an opportunity in the collegiate forum one final
time. USA South member Averett University hosted the first
contest two years ago while ODAC member Roanoke College welcomed
the two games to its campus in 2007. N.C. Wesleyan College
served as the host institution last season.
The event also features the theme "Sportsmanship
Counts." The games are intended to place the importance
of sportsmanship and the values of fair play.
The conferences split last season's games at N.C. Wesleyan with the
ODAC earning the victory in the men's tilt, 112-105, and the USA
South claiming the women's result, 82-74. The outcome was the
same in 2007 at Roanoke College, and the ODAC swept both matchups
in the 2006 event at Averett.
