Woodmore A Double All-American and Macedo Earn Top Awards
FOREST, Va. --- The National Association of Basketball Coaches Association (NABC) and D3hoops.com recently announced their All-Region and All-America teams, of which the ODAC was well-represented. Virginia Wesleyan sophomore guard D.J. Woodmore earned an All-America nod from each outlet, heading a group of five ODAC men's basketball players and coaches that were honored.
The 2012 Kurt Axe Memorial Player of the Year, Woodmore turned an All-South Region Player of the Year and First Team honoree from the NABC and an All-South First Team and a Honorable Mention All-America selection by D3hoops.com into a NABC All-America First Team accolade. He is just the fourth Marlins men's basketball player to earn NABC All-America honors.
Woodmore finished the season first in the league in total points (498) and free-throw percentage (85.6 percent). He also led VWC and was fourth in the ODAC in points per game (16.1). He scored double-digit points in 26 games this season, including a career-high 35-point outburst against Lynchburg in January that marked the second-highest total in the conference this season.
Virginia Wesleyan senior forward Donald Vaughn also received regional recognition. Vaughn was tabbed to the NABC's All-South Region Second Team after earning All-ODAC First Team laurels. He averaged 13.9 points per contest and 7.1 rebounds per game. Vaughn finished second in the conference in defensive rebounds (155) and third in total rebounds (221). He also registered 53 blocks on the year, good enough for second in the ODAC and recorded 172-of-306 field goals (2nd in the ODAC).
Virginia Wesleyan head coach Dave Macedo also turned his ODAC top coaching award into a regional top honor. Macedo was named by the NABC as the All-South Region Coach of the Year. He guided the Marlins to a 27-4 overall record this season. VWC won the conference tournament with a 65-61 win over Randolph College and received the league's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. Virginia Wesleyan received a first-round bye before defeating St. Mary's College, 70-57, in the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament in Virginia Beach, Va. VWC then headed to Whitewater, Wisc. where it faced Whitworth University in a sectional game. The Marlins defeated Whitworth, 74-71 in overtime, but fell to host and eventual national champion, University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, 76-62, in the quarterfinals.
Randolph guard Colton Hunt earned a pair of regional awards. The NABC and D3hoops.com tabbed the junior to their All-South Region Second Teams. Hunt was also named an All-ODAC First Team honoree, as well as the ODAC/Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the second-straight season. A Capital One Academic All-America Third Team pick by CoSIDA, Hunt finished second in the conference with 17.6 points per game. He was also second in the league in free-throw percentage (85 percent) and steals (77), and was fourth in three-pointers made (59).
Harrison George represented Hampden-Sydney College and the ODAC on the D3hoops.com All-South Region Second Team. George, a 2012 All-ODAC First Team choice, was third in the conference in scoring at 16.7 points per game. He led the league in field goals made (172-of-299) and was fourth in total points (451) and field goal percentage (57.5%).
