Top-Ranked R-MC Falls to Oswego State in NCAA Men's Basketball Sectionals

ASHLAND, Va. --- Senior Miles Mallory (Beltsville, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) recorded his third straight double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds, and senior Josh Talbert (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) finished with 21 points, as the top-ranked Randolph-Macon men's basketball team fell 74-63 in the third round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Lakers had the first bucket of the game before a three-pointer by Talbert gave the Yellow Jackets a 3-2 edge one minute into the contest. OSU used a 14-2 run to go up 16-5 before a one-hander by Mallory ended the spurt and made it 16-7 with just under 13 minutes remaining. The Lakers extended the lead to 29-14 before a three-point play and a three-pointer by Mallory highlighted an 8-0 run to make it 29-22 with 6:20 remaining in the first half. OSU would end the half on a 9-4 spurt to lead 38-26 at intermission. Mallory had 10 points and eight rebounds in the first period.
  • OSU had the first basket of the second stanza before three field goals by Talbert and a triple by junior Will Coble (Charlotte, N.C./Davidson Day) pulled RMC within five as 40-35 with 16:50 left. Following a layup by the Lakers, Mallory had a follow and freshman Keishawn Pulley, Jr. (Louisa, Va./St. Christopher's) had a reverse layup to pull the Yellow Jackets within three at 42-39 with 15:15 remaining. OSU used a 17-4 run to go up 59-43 before a three-point play by junior Daniel Mbangue (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) stopped the run to make it 59-46 with 8:57 left. It sparked a 12-0 spurt as RMC pulled within four at 59-55 with six minutes left. OSU would maintain its lead and hit 9 of 10 free throws in the final 1:16 to post the 74-63 win.

  • R-MC had its win streak snapped at 27 games. The Yellow Jackets also had their home win streak of 64 games snapped, a program record and the NCAA Division III record.
  • Mallory recorded three blocked shots. It gave him 274 for his career, a program and ODAC record.
