Lachlan Nets School-Record Eight Goals, Maroons Post Second-Half Shutout
SALEM, Va. --- Sophomore attack Richard
Lachlan (Port Coquitlam, B.C., Terry Fox Secondary) tied a school
postseason record with eight goals to lead #7 Roanoke to a 25-5
victory over Colorado College on Wednesday evening at Kerr Stadium.
The Maroons, who advance to the second round of the NCAA Div. III
Tournament, improve to 15-3. The Tigers, who made their first
postseason appearance, ended the season with a school-record of
15-1.
Roanoke, which is riding a 10-game winning-streak, posted
tournament school-records of most goals (25) and largest margin of
victory (+20), while Lachlan tied Jon Mason’s single-game
goals record which he set back in 2007 against Widener.
The Maroons snapped the Tigers' school-record 18-game run and
their perfect season. RC did so by blanking CC, 11-0, in the
second-half to secure the victory. Roanoke is now 3-0 all-time
against Colorado College, outscoring the Tigers 73-18.
Lachlan rattled off five first-quarter goals to give the Maroons a
5-2 advantage after 15-minutes of action. That momentum carried
over to the second period in which Roanoke outscored Colorado, 9-3,
to give the Maroons a commanding 14-5 halftime lead.
Jeff Keating (Chatham, NJ, Chatham) scored a goal and dished out
three assists in a six-goal third stanza. Combined with the final
two goals of the first half and five more tallies in the fourth
period, Roanoke recorded 13 unanswered goals to close the
contest.
Keating finished with eight points (3g, 5a), which puts him 15th
on the career scoring list with 183 points. Lachlan joined the
100-point club with a bang, as his eight goals propel him to 38th
on the career scoring list.
Justin Tuma (Bloomfield Hills, MI, Lahser) finished the night
winning 14-of-17 face-offs and collected 10 groundballs to give him
the single-season record in that category. Mike Hayden (Vienna, VA,
James Madison HS) finished with three goals and three assists
followed by Conner DuBois (Lititz, PA, Manheim Township), who
totaled two goals and three assists.
Charles Pease (Landisville, PA, Hempfield) (11-2) registered eight
saves and three groundballs between the pipes. Alex Burkhead
(Winston-Salem, NC, Forsyth Country Day) collected six groundballs
and caused three turnovers.
James Mauk led CC with three goals, including two in the first
quarter. Jeff Steedman (15-1) had 18 saves in goal for the
Tigers.
Roanoke will host Gettysburg College in the second round of the
national tournament on Saturday, May 14 at Kerr Stadium. The
Bullets (12-6) defeated Scranton, 8-3, on Wednesday. The series
between Roanoke and Gettysburg is tied 5-5, with three of the last
four meetings decided by a single goal. The Maroons won the last
meeting, 11-10 in overtime, in the second round of the 2010 NCAA
Division III Tournament. Game time on Saturday is scheduled for
2:00 p.m.
