NEWPORT NEWS, Va. --- The Lynchburg College men's soccer team fought until the end against Christopher Newport University in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, but ultimately fell on a late second-half goal Saturday night.
The Hornets, who fell to Christopher Newport 5-1 earlier in the season, responded in the first round of the tournament by holding the Captains scoreless for the first 45 minutes as Cory Budka made two saves for LC.
Lynchburg managed two get two of its four first half shots on goal, but Luke Moore and Tim Clancy both had attempts saved by Sam Lesko.
The Hornets held a 4-1 advantage in corners in the first half, but the Captains answered with a 4-1 lead in the second half.
Christopher Newport also led 10-3 in shots in the second half, forcing Budka to make three more saves. Unfortunately for the Hornets, one of the CNU shots found the back of the net as Sean Christein found Jimmy Grace at 76:32. It was his third goal of the season.
Christopher Newport (17-3-4) led in shots 16-7 while corner kicks finished even at five all.
Lesko finished with three saves for the Captains while Budka had five for the Hornets.
Lynchburg finished with a record of 13-7-1 after making its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 2010.
