Tigers' Junior Named Top Player for Third Time
SALEM, Va. --- Hampden-Sydney's William Moss
joined a rare group in ODAC history this week as the league's
coaches determined the 2009 Men's Tennis All-ODAC Teams. Moss
won his third straight ODAC Player of the Year award, giving him
for major playing awards in three seasons when coupled with his
2007 top rookie honor. Moss was also named the ODAC/Farm
Bureau Scholar-Athlete of the Year for 2009, the second straight
win of the award for a Hampden-Sydney student-athlete.
A pair of newcomers shared ODAC Rookie of the Year honors.
Roanoke College's Jon Roy and Jeremy Becht from Washington and Lee
University both laid claim to the first year accolade.
Bridgewater College head coach, Connor Smith, earned his first ODAC
Coach of the Year award.
Moss put together a third outstanding season on the courts, going
13-2 overall at No. 1 singles, 8-1 in ODAC play. He also put
together a 12-6 mark in doubles competition, posting a 9-4 mark
with partner Rich Pugh from the No. 1 slot. He went a
combined 4-0 in the ODAC tournament to help the Tigers claim their
third conference title and end a 13-year championship run by
Washington and Lee University.
Off the court, Moss boasts a 3.56 grade point average while
majoring in history with a minor in national security
studies. He is a member of several honor societies including
Omicron Delta Kappa (national leadership honorary), Phi Sigma Iota
(national foreign language honorary) and Phi Alpha Theta (national
history honorary).
Roy stepped right into the Maroons' No. 1 singles slot, going 9-4
in all matches with a 7-0 conference mark. He went 7-6 at No.
1 doubles, mostly with partner Sam Sherrill (6-6). Becht
split time amongst the top five singles flights for Washington and
Lee, going 4-4 from the No. 2 position on his way to a combined
11-5 record, 6-0 in ODAC play. Becht also went 12-5 in
doubles action overall, 6-0 in league matches.
Smith led Bridgewater to a third place finish and the third seed in
the 2009 ODAC Tournament. His Eagles posted a 7-2 conference
mark, 10-7 overall. His athletes earned six selections to the
All-ODAC First or Second Teams this season including first team
honors at No. 1 singles (Brian Remsch), No. 3 singles (Chris Radke)
and No. 1 doubles (Remsch and Ryan Radke).
