Washington and Lee Leads ODAC Men's Tennis Preseason Poll

Washington and Lee Leads ODAC Men's Tennis Preseason Poll

Guilford, Hampden-Sydney Tight for Second

FOREST, Va. --- Washington and Lee University has lifted eight straight league trophies and was picked to repeat yet again as the Generals headline the annual ODAC Men's Tennis Preseason Poll conducted by the league's head coaches. W&L earned 10 first place votes on the way to 100 total points. Guilford College and Hampden-Sydney College are separated by just three points for the next two positions. The Quakers tallied 84 points, while the Tigers picked up 81 markers including the remaining top nod.

Men's tennis is a charter sport in the ODAC dating back to the league's first season of competition in 1976-77. Washington and Lee has been a constant force throughout, winning 36 of the 41 championships competed. On the way to their latest title, the top-seeded Generals sprinted thru three matches in the 2017 ODAC Tournament with a trio of 5-0 victories over Virginia Wesleyan, Hampden-Sydney, and Guilford. The occasion marked the first-ever title match appearance for the Quakers.

Washington and Lee, which finished the 2017 season ranked 30th in the country and sixth in the Atlantic South Region by the ITA, continued its campaign in the NCAA team tournament. Its stay, however, wasn't as long as anticipated as the Generals fell to 22nd-ranked Sewanee, 5-3, in the first round at Emory University.

Jordan Krasner, who earned ODAC Player of the Year honors for a second time in addition to the ODAC/Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete award, continued his season in the Division III singles and doubles tournament. After an extraordinary first set that went to several extra points, Krasner was defeated by Grant Urken from Bowdoin College, 7-6 (12-10), 6-1, in the opening round of the tournament.

Even without Krasner following graduation, Washington and Lee opens the 2018 spring season carrying the ODAC's banner in the ITA rankings. The Generals sit 30th in the national poll and sixth in the Atlantic South listing.

Much of that prediction centers on W&L featuring eight of the 23 returning All-ODAC honors from a season ago. The Generals, however, aren't the only squad boasting more than a handful of accolades as Bridgewater and reigning ODAC Coach of the Year Jordon Robinson welcome back a half-dozen honors.

The source of W&L's recognition is focused on the first team with four singles and four doubles honors. Zack Ely, Mac Zheng, Mitchell Thomas, and Thomas Harmon collected first team laurels at #3, #4, #5, and #6 singles, respectively. Harmon and Zheng picked up a second set of honors at #2 doubles, while Charlie Kittredge was one-half of the #1 doubles tandem and Thomas was one side of the duo that earned a nod at #3 doubles.

All of Bridgewater's honors were from the 2017 second team. Josh Rodgers and Nathaniel Horner earned #4 and #5 singles awards, while Rodgers and Joe Dillenbeck were recognized at #1 doubles and Horner and Freddie Roberts garnered recognition at #3 doubles. Horner and Roberts have been partners going on two seasons and improved from 8-7 in 2015-16 to 14-5 in 2016-17.

Guilford looks to 2017 ODAC Rookie of the Year Tate Godwin to lead the charge. In addition to the top first-year honor, the Chapel Hill native earned first team honors at #1 singles and a second team choice as one-half of Guilford's #1 doubles pairing.

The remaining first team returners wear Hampden-Sydney College colors. Michael Moody was a double-honoree, picking up #2 singles laurels in addition to #1 doubles accolades with his brother and playing-partner Matthew Moody.

The 2018 spring season begins with non-conference action on Thursday, February 1.  The first ODAC match is slated for Saturday, February 24. The ODAC Tournament is set to begin Wednesday, May 2, with quarterfinal action at the four highest seeds. The semifinals and finals will be held at Virginia Wesleyan University on Saturday and Sunday, May 5-6.
