Myers 13th After Five Decathlon Events

Four Others Compete on Championships' Opening Day

CLAREMONT, Calif. --- Washington and Lee University's Dillon Myers sat in 13th position after the first five events of the decathlon following the opening day of competition at the 2012 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships.  Four other ODAC athletes competed on day one, including James Bell from Lynchburg College, who is four spots behind Myers in 17th in the decathlon.

Myers and Bell participated in the 100-meter and 400-meter dashes, the high and long jumps, and the shot put on day one.  Myers finished eighth in the 100m (11.37 for 780pts.), third in the 400m (50.27 for 802pts.), tied for 12th in the high jump (5' 11.25" for 636pts.), 10th in the long jump (21' 3.25" for 693pts.), and 19th in the shot put (31' 1.75" for 455pts.) to account for 3,366 points half-way thru the competition.  Bell racked up 3,282 points by placing 19th in the 100m (11.77 for 697pts.), 12th in the 400m (51.85 for 731pts.), fourth in the high jump (6' 4" for 740pts.), 20th in the long jump (18' 11.75" for 540pts.), and sixth in the shot put (37' 7.75" for 574pts.).  Christopher Newport University's Richard Roethel led the event with 3,987 points.

The Generals' Zander Tallman took to the track in the 200-meter dash preliminaries.  He crossed the line in 20th place with a time of 22.26, which did not qualify for the finals.

Bridgewater College's Olivia Mills competed in the 1,500-meter race, one of two events in which she'll be competing this weekend.  She finished the event with a time of 4:55.06, which ranked her 21st overall and outside the qualification line for the finals.

Shenandoah University's Amy Smith also hit the track for the 3,000-meter steeplechase.  She completed the extended hurdles event in 11:25.04, which put her in 21st place and outside finals' qualification status.
