Ford Delivers Two Hits in R-MC's One-Run Loss to CNU

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. --- Junior Sierra Ford (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) went 2 for 4 with a run as the Randolph-Macon softball team dropped a 3-2 decision in the second round of the Newport News Regional in the NCAA Division III Softball Championship Saturday afternoon at Captains Park.

All the runs were scored in the fourth. After the Captains (29-7) scored three in the top of the fourth, the Yellow Jackets (27-11) answered in the bottom of the frame. Ford led off the inning with a single and moved to second when junior Madison Gilman (Glen Allen, Va./Patrick Henry) reached on an error on a bunt attempt. Both runners moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt by senior Sharese Jarvis (Cobbs Creek, Va./Mathews). With two away, junior Katie Woody (Ashland, Va./Patrick Henry) hit a grounder to second that was thrown away, allowing both runners to score.

R-MC put runners on in each of the final three innings, but could not plate the tying run.

Woody, senior Amanda Sopko (Skippers, Va./Greensville) and freshman Skylar Toth (Midlothian, Va./Clover Hill) each had hits for the Yellow Jackets.

Freshman Nelda Bagley (20-5) allowed nine hits and three runs with two walks and five strikeouts.

Randolph-Macon will play an elimination game against the winner of the Ramapo-Salem contest later this afternoon.
