Three Teams Receive First Place Votes
FOREST, Va. --- Virginia Wesleyan College has stood at the top of the ODAC softball podium three of the past four years and the league coaches picked the Marlins as the favorite to again lift the conference trophy in the ODAC Softball Preseason Poll. VWC received nine first place votes on the way to collecting 99 total points to lead the annual survey.
The next three teams on the chart are separated by just one point. Randolph-Macon College and Lynchburg College are tied with 82 tallies, with the Yellow Jackets earning one first place nod. Eastern Mennonite University garnered the remaining top vote on the way to slotting fourth with 81 points.
Virginia Wesleyan entered the 2016 conference tournament as the top seed and made that billing stand up despite weather forcing an extra day of competition. The Marlins went 4-0 thru the double-elimination bracket at the James I. Moyer Sports Complex in Salem, Va., defeating Emory & Henry College (9-1) and Roanoke College (4-2) before topping EMU in the winners' bracket semifinals (6-2). The Royals made their way back to the top portion of the field and nearly forced an "if necessary" title-deciding contest, but VWC pulled out a 10-9 victory in nine innings.
The postseason continued for Virginia Wesleyan in the NCAA Division III Tournament. The Marlins, who finished the season ranked 29th by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association, were selected to host a four-team regional. The homefield advantage failed to help the Marlins as they dropped the opener, 2-0, to St. Vincent College and were then eliminated by Salisbury University, 2-1, the following day.
The NFCA preseason poll features a pair of ODAC squads entering 2017. The Marlins open the campaign as the 25th-rated team in Division III, while Randolph-Macon is one of 11 schools earning votes just outside the initial 25 ranked teams.
There will be plenty of talent returning to dugouts across the ODAC with 21 All-ODAC honorees set for another go-round in 2017. Lynchburg features a league-best six all-conference returners, including three of the seven back from the All-ODAC First Team. Second baseman Leslie Bourgeois and outfielder Skylar Dickens are joined by ODAC homerun leader (12) Mackenzie Chitwood.
Virginia Wesleyan also features multiple first team standouts in shortstop Kiersten Richardson and First Team All-American first baseman Cassetty Howerin. The Marlins' junior led the ODAC in batting average (.504) and runs driven in (63) as well as on-base percentage (.584), doubles (13), walks (28) and total bases (108).
Eastern Mennonite and Emory & Henry welcome back one first teamer each. The Royals are buoyed by third baseman Mariah Foltz, while the Wasps look to slugger Caley Hodge to pace the offense.
The 2017 season begins with non-conference play on Saturday, February 11. The first set of ODAC contests are slated for the Wednesday, March 1. If you can't make it to the games, be sure to check the schedules online for live video, audio and statistical links.
