Maroons Shake Off CNU Gem, Split Regional Softball Games on Day Two

SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke College was on the wrong end of a perfect game against nationally 10th-ranked Christopher Newport University in their first outing of the day. But the Maroons shook off the 2-0 shutout and defeated Misericordia University for the second time in two days with a 6-1 result to stay alive in NCAA Division III Softball Championship regional action.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1)

  • Captains starter Kate Alger faced the minimum in hurling a perfect game against the Maroons, improving to 14-5 on the season.
  • Roanoke starter Lindsay Gedro also pitched well, surrendering two runs on just five hits with four strikeouts against 10th-ranked CNU

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2)

  • Roanoke was quick to jump on top by scoring a run in the top of the first inning. With runners on the corners Adriana Rivera stole second to bait a throw from the catcher which allowed Meri Bostic to steal home.
  • The Maroons added three more runs in the top of the fourth when Madison Courts hit a three-run triple to clear the bases.
  • In the top of the fourth Bostic reached first on a fielding error by the shortstop and then advanced off a SAC bunt from Morgan Clark. Rivera hit a line drive single up the middle to plate another run for the Maroons.
  • Rivera went 2 for 3 with one RBI and Courts went 1 for 3 with three RBIs.

UP NEXT: The Maroons must win twice on Saturday to advance beyond on the regional round of the tournament. They square off with the host Captains in the first of two possible games at 12:00 p.m. ET. The second game, if needed, will start 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game (barring any weather-related or other delays).
