VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. --- Mike Ginder, assistant swimming coach at Bucknell University, has been named the first men's and women's swimming coach at Virginia Wesleyan College, according to Joanne Renn, Executive Director of Intercollegiate Athletics.
Dr. Scott D. Miller, President of the College, announced the start of the program in his State of the College address in August. The program will compete in the NCAA Division III and Old Dominion Athletic Conference in the fall of 2017.
"We are delighted to appoint a head coach of Mike's caliber to lead this new program," Renn said. "His experience—and success--at the Division I and Division III levels and his familiarity with our Conference, make him the perfect fit."
Ginder has served as assistant coach at Bucknell University since 2012. He provided direct instruction to 60 student-athletes while primarily working with the freestyle and backstroke swimmers. Prior to Bucknell, Ginder was an assistant swim coach at Georgetown University (2011-12) and Catholic University (2010-11).
He began his coaching career at Washington and Lee University where he served from 2007-10. He mentored 55 student-athletes while working with the Generals, maintaining recruiting and alumni relations efforts. He coordinated the university's "Learn-To-Swim" program for children in the local community as well.
A former standout at Washington and Lee, he was team captain and a 16-time NCAA All-American swimmer.
He holds a bachelor of science degree in commerce in business administration from Washington and Lee and a master of professional studies in sports industry management from Georgetown University.
He has achieved American Swimming Coaches Association (ASCA) Level 2 certification and is also certified as a National Swimming Pool Foundation (NSPF) Certified Pool and Spa Operator.
The Marlins will compete in the natatorium of the Jane P. Batten Student Center.
