Generals Lead ODAC Women's Swimming Coaches' Poll

Randolph-Macon, Roanoke Round Out Top-Three

FOREST, Va. --- Eleven-time defending conference champion Washington and Lee University stands atop the ODAC Women's Swimming Coaches' Poll, picking up 121 points including 11 first place votes in the league's annual survey. Randolph-Macon College sits second with 109 points, while Roanoke College breaks into the top-three with 95 tallies including the remaining top nod as the Maroons embark on their second season of competition.

Three new squads added to the depth and quality of the women's swimming ranks and subsequent championship competition in 2017-18, but you wouldn't know it from watching Washington and Lee dominate at the Greensboro Aquatic Center last February. The Generals racked up 1,053.0 points after winning 12-of-13 individual events and all five relays to hoist their ODAC record 28th women's swimming trophy. Randolph-Macon finished second with 613.0 points, and Bridgewater College out-paced Emory & Henry College, 365.0 to 337.0, to place third.

Five records fell over the three days of competition, which was quite an achievement considering 20 new benchmarks were established at the 2017 championships. W&L's Mattie Grant and Emily Hageboeck, who went on to secure ODAC Rookie and ODAC Swimmer of the Year laurels, set championship and ODAC overall records in the 1,650-freestyle (17:30.94) and 200-breaststroke (2:16.81), respectively. The Generals 400-medley relay team of Ashley Johnston, Hageboeck, Ali MacQueen, and Elle Chancey set a new championship record (3:48.18).

Washington and Lee's success continued at the NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships in Indianapolis, Ind., as 13 Generals including eight women's swimmers competed over four days. Each student-athlete took home at least one Honorable Mention All-American award. Hageboeck highlighted the contingent as she broke her own ODAC record in the 400-IM (4:29.18) and finished seventh in the 200-breaststroke (2:18.41) to earn First Team All-America recognition.

The combination of another year's worth of high-quality recruiting and a strong crop of talented returners could see unprecedented levels of success in ODAC waters in 2018-19. In fact, 31 of the 35 All-ODAC honorees return to league rosters including every member of the 14-woman All-ODAC First Team and each athlete that won an event at the ODAC Championships.

The Generals lead that charge with 16-of-18 overall honorees and all 10 of their first team qualifiers back in Lexington. Kelly Amar, Chancey, Taylor Ecleberry, Grant, Hageboeck, Johnston, and MacQueen won at least one event in Greensboro in 2018, while Katherine Degner, Hannah Freibert, and Jordan Watson earned their top-billings with second place finishes.

Randolph-Macon welcomes back all nine of its All-ODAC standouts including three from the first team. That latter group is made up of Kata Kylliainen, Kacey Pool, and Laney Sanchez. The remaining first team returner dons Roanoke colors. Reilly Bird was the only non-Washington and Lee swimmer to win an individual event at last year's championships.

The Greensboro Aquatic Center will again be home to the ODAC Championships in 2019. This season's event is scheduled for February 15-17. The GAC and the ODAC in conjunction with the Greensboro Sports Commission have the added privilege of hosting the 2019 NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships. That four-day affair is set for March 20-23.

Listed below is the 2018-19 ODAC Women's Swimming Coaches' Poll as well as preview capsules for each of the ODAC women's swimming programs.
