ODAC Men's Swimming Poll | Washington and Lee Tabbed at the Top

FOREST, Va. --- The second installment of the ODAC Men's Swimming Preseason Poll has a familiar feel with five-time league champion Washington and Lee University topping the survey entering the 2019-20 campaign. The Generals secured the top position with 100 points including 10 first place votes. Roanoke College picked up the remaining top nod on the way to 88 markers and the second spot. Randolph-Macon College rounds out the top-three with 85 tallies.

Much like on the women's side of the ledger, depth of talent experienced an uptick in 2018-19 with three schools finishing with more than 500 points at the ODAC Championships last February. Washington and Lee added to its championship haul - W&L has won all five championships since men's swimming official became an ODAC-sponsored sport - by collecting 913.0 points and winning 6-of-13 individual events and all five relays.

The remaining seven individual events were split between Roanoke with four victories and Randolph-Macon with a trio of wins. The Maroons finished second with 622.0 points, while the Yellow Jackets placed third at 541.0 tallies.

Seven new standards were established over four events. Roanoke's Connor Kinkema, who took home ODAC Rookie of the Year honors, was major contributor to that cause with ODAC championship and overall records in the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke events.

The Generals' Patrick Sullivan, who earned ODAC Swimmer of the Year honors prior last season, was the lone men's qualifier for the NCAA Division III championships. He did not disappoint as he highlighted several strong swims with a fifth place finish in the 200-yard freestyle. That awarded him full All-America honors. He received honorable mention All-Americal laurels in the same event in 2018.

League rosters are bursting with returning All-ODAC honorees from a season ago with 28 of the 37 award winners set to return. That list includes 13-of-14 from the All-ODAC First Team.

Washington and Lee leads the way with 11-of-16 all-league swimmers back in Lexington, including each of their six first team honorees. In addition to Sullivan, Generals' returning first teamers include Danny Lynch, Jared Nickodem, Fitz Rawls, Conner Van Vooren, and Steven Warren.

Roanoke also welcomes back a spoil of riches with each of eight All-ODAC swimmers back. That includes first teamers Kinkem, Parker Devillier, and Nick McGrath. Randolph-Macon features three first team qualifiers of its four all-league returners in Wyatt Boyer, Victor Kontopanos, and Joe Stephens.

The remaining first team returner dons Hampden-Sydney College colors as Woody Parsons returns to the Tigers' roster.

In addition to the strong corps of returning talent to league rosters, ODAC waters will feature a new program with the University of Lynchburg entering its first season of conference competition. Head coach Brad Dunn, who arrived on campus as the Director of Men's and Women's Swimming in August 2018, has filled out a roster of 16 men, building depth into the new program right away. Sophomore Chris Jennings (men’s lacrosse dual-sport) and freshmen Parker Hayungs and Kevin Bennett highlight the new squad.

The 2019-20 season kicks off the weekend of Friday, September 27 and continues thru the remainder of the fall into early December before a brief hiatus into January. The conference championship is a week earlier that in past years, but also features a fourth day of competition. The championship, which returns to the Greensboro Aquatic Center, is set for February 6-9, 2020. The ODAC will also serve as co-hosts for the NCAA Championships for a second straight year. The nation's best swimmers head to the GAC for four days of competition from March 18-21, 2020.
