BC’s Cantrell, E&H’s Langley also Honored
FOREST, Va. --- Roanoke College guard Paxton
Gwin headlines the 2014 All-ODAC Women’s Basketball Teams as
the Maroons’ standout was tabbed ODAC Player of the Year in a
vote of the league’s head coaches. Eastern Mennonite
University mentor Kevin Griffin was named the ODAC Coach of the
Year, while Bridgewater College forward Heather Cantrell earned
ODAC Rookie of the Year accolades. Emory & Henry guard Kristie
Langley collected the ODAC/Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete of
the Year honor, in a vote of the conference’s sports
information directors.
Gwin, a senior from Buxton, N.C., is a two-time All-ODAC First
Team selection. She is first in the conference with 171 field
goals made and second in the league in scoring with 18.6 points per
game. Gwin has scored in double figures in all 25 games played this
year and has notched five double-doubles. She is also grabbing 6.6
rebounds per game and is shooting 81.1% from the charity stripe
(sixth in the ODAC). Gwin scored 20 or more points 10 times,
including a season-best 28 against Randolph-Macon in January.
Griffin's top coaching accolade marks the third of his career,
having previously won the award in 2007 and 2013. Now in his
ninth season at the helm, Griffin's Royals enter the 2014 ODAC
tournament as the top seed for the second straight year with a 21-4
overall mark and a 15-1 conference record. EMU is currently
riding a 12-game win streak, having only lost in conference play to
sixth-seeded Roanoke. In search of the program's third league
title, Griffin enters the tournament with a 158-76 (.675) career
record.
Cantrell, a freshman from Singers Glen, Va., made an immediate
impact at Bridgewater this season. She averages 11.8 points per
game and is currently ninth in the ODAC at 7.3 rebounds per
contest. She's registered six double-doubles, and is
currently fifth in the league in free throw shooting (81.1%) and
sixth in blocked shots (25). Cantrell notched a career-high 21
points against Emory & Henry in Bridgewater’s first round
win against Emory & Henry.
Langley, a junior from Staley, N.C., is the first Emory &
Henry women's basketball player to earn the ODAC/Farm Bureau
Insurance Scholar-Athlete award. In the classroom, Langley sports a
4.0 grade point average as a Biology and Pre-Medicine
double-major. She is the only ODAC women’s basketball
player to be named a Capital One Division III Academic All-District
recipient the past two years. On the hardwood, she led the Wasps
this season in scoring at 11.3 points per game, having scored in
double digits in 16 contests. She corralled 5.2 rebounds per game
and shot 73.8-percent (45-of-61) from the foul line.
