Randolph-Macon Closes Season with Loss to CNU in NCAA Second Round

ASHLAND, Va. --- The Randolph-Macon Women's Basketball 2017-18 campaign came to a close Saturday night in NCAA Tournament Second Round action against Christopher Newport 84-58 in Crenshaw Gymnasium. R-MC closes the season with a host of accolades, including ODAC Tournament Champions and the ODAC's Player of the Year for sophomore Kelly Williams (Garysburg, N.C./Halifax Academy).

The Captains and their press defense played the Yellow Jackets tough for the first 4:23, keeping R-MC off the board for almost half of the first quarter while putting up the first seven points offensively. After Williams got R-MC's first bucket, CNU kept the pressure on, ripping off the next 11 points, while allowing just four Yellow Jacket points. The Captains took the 25-14 lead into the second quarter.

Randolph-Macon used the break between the quarters to adjust. Over the first two and a half minutes of the second quarter, R-MC closed the gap to just six. But six would be the closest R-MC would get the entire game, though they remained that close through much of the action in the second quarter. But in the waning minutes, CNU took advantage of its depth and pushed the lead to 16 by halftime.

R-MC continued to try and cut the CNU lead for much of the second half and would get as close as 13 in the third quarter as freshman Becca Arrington (Amelia, Va./Amelia Academy) made a three-pointer with 1:21 to go, bringing the score to 62-49. Randolph-Macon outscored CNU 18-17 in the period.

CNU kept the pressure on in the fourth quarter and eventually powered to the 84-58 victory. The Captains now advance to the National Sectional round.

Williams finished with 21 points and 15 rebounds and finishes the season with 736 points and 527 rebounds, both team and Old Dominion Athletic Conference records. As a team, R-MC set a new team record for most rebounds in a season in the ODAC with 1,457. Many of those rebounds came offensively from Williams and sophomore Charlotte Woods (Richmond, Va./Trinity). Woods finished tonight's game with six offensive rebounds and 12 total rebounds to go with her 14 points, marking her 13th double-double in 2017-18.

Junior Jayla Wade (Newport News, Va. / Heritage) hit a three-pointer and made an additional bucket plus two free throws to tally seven points. She also made a steal and an assist. Arrington had a pair of threes to total six points and pulled in four rebounds. Junior Kelsey Wisner (York, Pa. / Central York) also had six points and contributed three rebounds, three assists and two steals. Fellow junior Leara Shumate (Fishersville, Va. / Wilson Memorial) had three points while freshman Elise Knobloch (Glenville, Pa. / Delone Catholic) added a point, a steal and an assist.

Senior Teal Reynolds (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls) made a pair of assists and a steal on the night. She completes her Randolph-Macon career with 376 points, 133 assists (of which 92 were this year) and 118 assists (65 this year).

Randolph-Macon finishes the season with a 23-6 overall record while going 12-4 in regular season ODAC play.
