W&L Falls to York (Pa.) in NCAA First Round

Generals' Season Ends with 10-10 Overall Record

YORK, Pa. --- Ninth-ranked York (Pa.) used a 10-4 lead in the first half to pull well ahead of the Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team and claim a 13-6 win on Wednesday in NCAA Division III Tournament first round action at Kinsley Field.

YCP (14-4) jumpstarted the first half with seven unanswered goals for a 7-0 lead by the 14:37 mark. During the run, senior midfielder Leah Schultz netted three goals and junior attacker Erica Mulford added a pair of tallies.

Off a goal by sophomore attacker Catherine Klinedinst (McLean, Va./Holton-Arms School), the Generals were on the board to bring the score to 7-1 at 11:45. Just 1: 07 later junior attackerMargaret Klein (North Andover, Mass./Brooks) notched W&L's (10-10) second goal of the game, cutting its deficit to five (7-2).

The Spartans pushed their lead back to seven with 6:08 left in the half as Schultz and senior attacker Kim Wayson each registered a goal. In the final 5:33 of the period, the Generals knocked in two more goals by junior attacker Meade Brewster (Brookside, N.J./West Morris Mendham) and first-year midfielder Amelia Murcott (Madison, N.J./Madison), while Wayson added another for YCP to give the Spartans a 10-4 advantage at the break.

After a three-hour delay for weather, YCP continued to hold its lead in the second period. With scores by first-year attacker Megan Stine and Schultz, the Spartans pulled ahead, 12-4, with 15:17 left to play.

Brewster broke up the run with a goal at 6:57 (12-5), only to have Mulford score another for YCP at push to bring the lead to 13-5. The Generals scored once more off a free position with 18 seconds to go, but the Spartans were too much as they claimed a 13-6 win and earned a trip to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

In goal for the Blue and White was sophomore Cara Mulligan(Glen Ridge, N.J./Glen Ridge), who collected eight saves and 13 goals-against in 60 minutes of action. Junior Ashley Smith tallied eight saves and six goals-against, while spending the entire game in the cage for York.

W&L was paced by Brewster, who notched three goals and one assist to along with three draw controls. On the defensive end, junior Leanne Stone (Darien, Conn./Darien) picked up four ground balls and three caused turnovers and junior Olive Waxter(Baltimore, Md./Roland Park) recorded three ground balls.

For York, Schultz led with five goals and one assist. Wayson and Mulford added three tallies and senior attacked Kasie White dished out three assists.

With the loss, the Generals have completed their season. They finished with a 10-10 overall record and claimed the program's 14th Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championship.
