Generals Down Sewanee in NCAA Women's Lacrosse Second Round

LEXINGTON, Va. --- Junior attacker Melissa Coggins (St. John's, Fla. / Bartram Trail) tallied five points on two goals and three assists in the 10th-ranked Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team's 18-4 victory over Sewanee in second round action of the 2015 NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Tournament at Watt Field on Sunday.

Coggins now has the fourth-most career assists in program history with 65, and her 36 assists this season are the fourth-most in a single season for W&L.

The Generals (16-2) opened up the contest with a 3-0 run, ignited by sophomore attacker Lauren Procaccino (Manhasset, N.Y. / Manhasset) when she scored off of a feed from senior midfielderSammy Yates (Ridgewood, N.J. / Ridgewood) at the 29:12 mark.

Junior attacker Katie Riddle (Charlotte, N.C. / Mercersburg Academy) and first-year attacker Relly King (Baltimore, Md. / Garrison Forest School) tallied the Tigers' (17-2) two markers of the first stanza. Riddle scored off of an assist from senior attacker Mallory Grimm (South Salem, N.Y. / John Jay) with 25:06 on the clock to cut the lead to 3-1.  Then King found the back of the net at the 20:51 mark (4-2).

W&L ended the half on an eight-goal run to take a 12-2 lead into intermission.

Sophomore midfielder Olivia Sisson (Great Falls, Va. / Langley) posted her third goal of the contest at the 25:31 mark in the second stanza off of an assist from Procaccino (13-2).  Yates and Procaccino scored the next two goals to increase the Generals' lead to 15-2.

The Tigers responded when King notched her second marker of at the game with 11:10 on the clock (15-3), but sophomore midfielder Corinne Wood (Phoenix, Md. / Dulaney) sparked another three-goal spurt for W&L when she logged her second goal of the game at the 9:39 mark.

Senior midfielder Sally Anne Greenwood (Wyndmoor, Pa. / Germantown Academy) tallied Sewanee's last goal with 1:26 remaining in the game to reach the final margin.

For the game, W&L held an advantage in shots (31-10) and in draw controls (16-8). Sewanee held an edge in ground balls (20-18).

Senior keeper Cara Mulligan (Glen Ridge, N.J. / Glen Ridge) saw 53:08 of action in net for the Generals and finished with three saves, while first-year goalie Harleigh Bean (Upper Marlboro, Md. / Episcopal) played the remaining 6:52. Sophomore Crawford Horan (Alexandria, Va. / Episcopal) suffered the loss for the Tigers and recorded 10 saves.

Coggins' five points led the Blue and White's offense, while Sisson netted a game-high three goals. First-year attacker Jess Castelo (Red Bank, N.J. / The Lawrenceville School) finished with two goals and two assists, and first-year defender Riley Garcia (Manhasset, N.Y. / Manhasset) scored her first collegiate goal and picked up a game-high five ground balls.

Relly had two markers, while Riddle and Greenwood chipped in a goal apiece for the Tigers.

W&L will return to action on May 16 and will face 17th-ranked Fredonia in the regionals of the NCAA Tournament. The location and time is to be determined.
