W&L's Soutter and O'Brien Headline All-ODAC Women's Lax Awards

RC'S BARLOW, R-MC'S PATRICK TAKE HOME MAJOR HONORS

FOREST, Va. --- Washington and Lee University standout Hayley Soutter and head coach Brooke O'Brien took home two major honors to highlight the 2017 All-ODAC Women's Lacrosse Awards. Soutter earned ODAC Player of the Year laurels while O'Brien was tabbed the ODAC Coach of the Year. Roanoke College midfielder Morgan Barlow received ODAC Rookie of the Year recognition, and Randolph-Macon College defender Kristin Patrick garnered ODAC/Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete accolades.

There are plenty of familiar names dotting this season's awards lists with 18 repeat All-ODAC honorees from a season ago. That includes eight returning performers on the All-ODAC First Team. W&L's duo of midfielder Haley Tucker and defender Parker Hamill repeat on the first team. R-MC sees 2016 Player of the Year, Alicia Hsieh, and attack Alex Lightfoot return to the top team along with midfielder Susie Snee, who moves up from a second team choice last season. Roanoke defender Emma Boris is a first team again and is joined by attack Courtney McCartin, who moved up from a 2016 second team selection. Bridgewater College goalkeeper Rachel Gruber is also a first teamer for a second straight year.

Soutter, a senior from McLean, Va., put together a strong season after returning from an injury that cost her all of the 2015-16 campaign. Soutter led Washington and Lee and placed 10th in the league in points with 45. She notched an ODAC eighth-best 33 goals to go with 12 assists, which sit 12th in the league. She registered at least one point in all 17 games played this season, scoring three or more goals seven times with a season-best four tallies in a late regular-season win over Bridgewater. Soutter also did her fair share of work in ball-control and defensive situations. She racked up 19 ground balls and seven draw controls while causing 15 turnovers. The Generals' captain had some of her best games against the toughest competition, racking up three goals each against Franklin & Marshall, Salisbury, Gettysburg, and Catholic.

O'Brien enjoys her fifth overall and second straight ODAC top coaching honor as her nationally second-ranked Generals prepare to host first and second round action in the NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Tournament.  In her 10th season holding the reins at W&L, O'Brien led the Generals' to their eighth straight and 18th overall ODAC title with a 7-3 win over Randolph-Macon in the conference championship.  It is the ninth trophy she has hoisted in her tenure.  Entering the NCAA postseason, O'Brien boasts a 146-46 (.760) overall record that includes an 85-4 (.955) mark in ODAC play.

Barlow, a freshman from South Hamilton, Mass., stepped in and became a force that improved with each game for Roanoke. She finished third on the team in scoring with 26 points on 24 goals and a pair of assists. She also registered 23 draw controls and pulled in nine ground balls to go with four caused turnovers. After opening the season without a point in her first two games, Barlow went on a 13-game streak with at least one point in each outing. She registered a season-best five goals at McDaniel midway thru the campaign and registered eight goals and two assists combined over her final three games.

Patrick, a senior from Pasadena, Md., performs both on and off the field for R-MC. In the classroom, Patrick boasts a 3.96 grade point average as a Biology major with minors in Chemistry, Mathematics, and French. A member of R-MC's chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, Patrick earned the Stephen H. Watts Award (biology) in addition to memberships in several honor societies including Pi Mu Epsilon (mathematics), Beta Beta Beta (biology), and Chi Beta Phi (science). She is a participant in the George Washington School of Medicine and Health Sciences Early Selection Program. On the field, Patrick is a key cog in a Yellow Jackets defense that surrendered the second-fewest goals (63) in the ODAC regular season. She registered 11 total caused turnovers and picked up 33 ground balls and three draw controls.
