Generals Fall to York in NCAA Second Round

YORK, Pa. --- The eighth-ranked York women's lacrosse team jumped out to a 10-0 lead and never looked back in claiming a 10-3 victory over 10th-ranked Washington and Lee in the second round of the NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Tournament on Sunday afternoon at Kinsley Field.

The Spartans (14-4) assumed control of the game from the start, as they claimed a 2-0 lead just three minutes into the contest with goals from senior midfielder Melissa Meehling and sophomore midfielder Devin Hursey.

The Generals (16-5) had their first good look at goal at the 25:55 mark, but Spartan senior goalkeeper Charlotte Wright made a point-blank save to keep the Generals off the board. York kept the offensive pressure on W&L and closed the half with three goals to claim a 5-0 lead heading into intermission.

York continued its scoring flurry in the second half and used a five-goal run to take a 10-0 lead with 17:51 remaining. Sophomore attacker Meghan Fox and junior attacker Skye Slater each tallied two goals for the Spartans during the spurt.

The Generals finally broke through at the 11:20 mark of the second half with a free position goal from senior attacker Mimi MacCowatt (New Vernon, N.J. / Kent Place). Sophomore attacker Collette Murray (Manhasset, N.Y. / Manhasset) added a free position goal with 5:09 left. First-year midfielder Claire Fulton (Hagerstown, Md. / Saint James School) then scored an unassisted goal with 3:45 remaining, but that was as close as W&L would get, as York pulled out the 10-3 win.

For the game, York held a 27-20 edge in shots, while the Generals claimed a slim 21-19 advantage in ground balls.

MacCowatt, Murray and Fulton led W&L with one goal apiece. Sophomore defender Caitlin Anderson (Manhasset, N.Y. / Manhasset) finished with five ground balls and three caused turnovers, while senior defender Riley Garcia (Manhasset, N.Y. / Manhasset) picked up four ground balls and caused three turnovers.

Sophomore Elliot Gilbert (Bedford, N.Y. / Deerfield Academy) played 48:04 minutes in goal and made 11 saves, while senior Hannah Wiltshire (Wilton, Conn. / Wilton) saw the final 11:56 in goal and did not face a shot.

Meehling, Slater and Fox led the Spartans with two goals each, while Hursey added a goal and three assists. Wright played the entire game in goal for York and made 11 saves.

With the loss, W&L ends the 2018 campaign with a 16-5 record. The Generals captured the program's 19th ODAC title and made its 18th appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
