Generals Fly Past Transylvania in NCAA Second Round

LEXINGTON, Va. --- The fifth-ranked Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team posted a 21-0 shutout win over Transylvania in the second round of the NCAA Division III Championship on Sunday.
 
The Generals (18-2) held an 8-0 lead through the first quarter of play, led by a trio of goals from junior attacker Allie Schwab (Bryn Mawr, Pa. / Harriton). Two of Schwab's goals, the team's third and fourth of the game, were assisted by senior attacker Janie Stillwell (Alexandria, Va. / Episcopal).
 
By the end of the second, the W&L lead swelled to 15-0, as sophomore midfielder Walker McKnight (Nashville, Tenn. / Harpeth Hall) and senior midfielder McKenna Edmondson (Westfield, N.J. / Westfield) both scored twice in the frame. Stillwell added another two assists in the second quarter, while sophomore attacker Hanna Bishop (Bronxville, N.Y. / Bronxville), Schwab and sophomore midfielder Ginny Taylor (Madison, N.J. / Madison) tallied one score each.
 
W&L scored two goals in the third quarter and four goals in the fourth to round out the scoring. First-year midfielder Brianna Benoit (Baldwin, N.Y. / Baldwin Senior) scored a pair of goals in the fourth to lead the second-half scorers.
 
Schwab (four goals) and Stillwell (four assists) led the Generals' offense with four points each in the game, while Bishop and McKnight each tallied three. Bishop scored two goals and assisted on another, and McKnight scored three goals. W&L had 13 different players tally a point in the game, with 10 players logging multiple points.

Defensively, sophomore Eugenie Rovegno (Duxbury, Mass. / Duxbury) led the way with five ground balls, three caused turnovers and three draw controls. Sophomore defender Allie Doyle (Ridgewood, N.J. / Ridgewood) also had a strong defensive performance, with four caused turnovers and three ground balls.
 
Sophomore goalkeeper Caroline Kranich (State College, Pa. / Mercersburg Academy) (17-2) earned the win in goal after she made one save while playing the first half. Sophomore Stefanie Chiguluri (Fairview, Tenn. / Harpeth Hall) and senior Sam Sunar (Mountain Lakes, N.J. / Mountain Lakes) played the third and fourth quarters, respectively, and combined for three saves to finish off the team's first shutout since a 29-0 victory over Bridgewater on April 21 of last season.
 
Transylvania junior attackers Abbey Peterson and Mandi Rider posted a team-high three shot attempts each on offense. Junior goalkeeper Abi Waldron (9-9) played all 60 minutes and made nine saves.
 
For the game, the Generals held advantages over the Pioneers in ground balls (26-14), draw controls (18-4) and shots on goal (30-4).
 
The Generals advance to the third round of the NCAA Championship, and they will face-off against No. 12 Wesleyan (Conn.) next weekend. Information on the site, date and time of the game will be released later this week.
