Remains Women's Soccer Coach and Director of Physical Education
LEXINGTON, Va. --- Washington and Lee Director
of Athletics Jan Hathorn has announced that Neil Cunningham has
been promoted to assistant athletic director effective
immediately. Cunningham will remain the school's women's
soccer coach and director of physical education.
I am pleased to offer this promotion to Neil," said Hathorn. "He is
a top-notch educator and professional who, in addition to his
coaching duties, has performed exceptionally in the role as our
director of physical education. I am excited about working
with Neil in this new capacity."
Cunningham has served as W&L's women's soccer coach since 2001,
compiling a 116-25-16 (.789) overall record and twice earning ODAC
and NSCAA South Region Coach of the Year honors. He has
guided the Generals to a pair of ODAC titles and four NCAA
Tournament appearances, including a trip to the NCAA "Elite Eight"
in 2006. In addition to his soccer responsibilities,
Cunningham was promoted to director of physical education in
2007.

capacity," said Cunningham. "I am excited about this new
challenge."
Cunningham earned a bachelor's degree in physical education from
the West London Institute of Higher Education and gained a master
of science in sport leadership from Virginia Commonwealth
University in 2003.
Cunningham and his wife, Susan, W&L's director of major gifts,
reside in Lexington with their son, Daniel and daughter, Anna.
