AMHERST, Va. --- Former assistant
coach Eric Struble has been named the interim head soccer
coach at Sweet Briar College, replacing Kevin Fabulich.
Struble will organize and coach the team's non-traditional practice
sessions in the spring, along with continuing recruiting efforts
for the remainder of the 2014-15 school year.
Fabulich, who led the Vixen program for the past eight years, has
accepted the position of Executive Director at Central Virginia
United Soccer Club in Lynchburg, Va.
Fabulich departs as the program's all-time leader in victories with
22. He and Struble helped Sweet Briar to its best season ever in
2014, equaling or breaking team marks for wins (seven), ODAC
victories (four), winning percentage (.467) and shutouts (five).
That included a 5-2 opening month and the first 4-0 start in school
history. The Vixens barely missed out on their first ODAC playoff
spot since 1997 on head-to-head tiebreakers.
A young 2014 roster featured seven underclass starters, including
the team's top five leading scorers.
"We wish Kevin the best as he ventures into this new direction
outside of college athletics," said Sweet Briar athletic
director Teresa Boylan. "We have been fortunate to work with
Kevin and know him as a colleague and friend, and see the soccer
program grow in a positive direction."
Struble has been an assistant for the past three seasons with the
Vixens, as the team improved by three or more wins for two
consecutive seasons.
Struble was a four-year player for the Randolph College men's
soccer team. He holds an NSCAA Goalkeeping II Diploma and a USSF
National D License, and has also coached with the Alta Vista High
School varsity girls' soccer program.
"The team is in very capable hands with Coach Struble, said Boylan.
"I have confidence the soccer players and program will continue
forward with what we have in place for spring season."
