Lynchburg Advances in NCAA Women's Soccer with Win Over Stevenson

LYNCHBURG, Va. --- The top-ranked Lynchburg College women's soccer team defeated Stevenson University (MD) 4-1 Sunday in the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament to advance into the round of 16.

Scoring opportunities abounded in the first half for the Hornets. Lynchburg had three shot attempts hit the goal post and bounce out in the first 45 minutes. LC got on the scoreboard at the 18:19 mark of the first as Angela Bosco scored from Dessi Dupuy as the senior duo converted after a give-and-go. The contest was 1-0 at intermission.

Lynchburg was awarded a corner kick nine minutes after halftime, and made the score 2-0 whenDana Nelsen found Kelley Smith for a header and into the back of the net.

The Hornets put the game away 10 minutes later with back-to-back goals in a 22-second span. Bosco found Dupuy on a breakaway for the first tally, and Samantha Bagherpour connected off a 30-yard shot from Smith to push the lead to 4-0.

The Mustangs got on the scoreboard with 17 minutes remaining on the game clock as Jordan Porretto scored on an assist from Allie Ondrejcak off of a free kick. It is the first goal allowed by the Hornets since September 13 and just the third this season.

The Hornets outshot Stevenson 22-7 and held a 5-1 edge in corner kicks. Stevenson goalie Tiffany McKee made six saves while Tess Frelick stopped three shots.

Lynchburg (24-0) now awaits to see where third and fourth round play will be held. LC faces Montclair State, a 1-0 double overtime winner over Connecticut College Sunday night. More details will be available on Monday.
