Mertens Delivers as Lynchburg Defeats Babson in NCAA First Round

GLASSBORO, N.J. --- Freshman Caitlin Mertens scored the game's only goal to lift the 12th-ranked Lynchburg College women's soccer team to a 1-0 win Saturday evening over Babson College (MA) in the first round of the 2015 NCAA Division III Tournament, hosted by Rowan University.

It is the fourth-straight season that Dr. Todd Olsen's Hornets have earned a spot in the tournament's round of 32.

Lynchburg outshot the Beavers 10-0 in the first half, but couldn't break through until late in the opening stanza. Freshly into the game as a substitute, Mertens turned and fired from just outside of the box and into the back of the net at 41:16. Senior defender Alexis Jensen recorded an assist on the play.

Neither team could score in the second half, despite 10 combined shots and a pair of corner kicks.

Freshman keeper Elizabeth Mycock made seven saves for Babson (14-4-5), and LC's Tess Frelick recorded her eighth shutout of the season with two stops. The Hornets outshot the Beavers 15-5 and held a 3-1 edge in corner kicks over the 90 minutes of action.

The Hornets (20-2-2) move on to play Rowan Sunday at 5 p.m. with the winner advancing to the Sweet 16. Rowan defeated Lasell College (MA) 2-0 in the first game of the day in Glassboro, NJ.
