HU’s Budrus Back-to-Back Scholar-Athlete
FOREST, Va. --- Sweet Briar College first year
player Ariel Taylor turned a double in women’s tennis as she
was named both the ODAC Player and Rookie of the Year as part of
the 2011 All-ODAC Women’s Tennis awards. Washington and
Lee University head coach Eric Ishida secured his fourth straight
and fourth overall ODAC Coach of the Year honor. Hollins
University’s Sarah Budrus was tabbed the ODAC/Farm Bureau
Insurance Scholar-Athlete for the second straight season in a vote
of the league’s sports information directors.
Taylor, a freshman from Springfield, Va., won a pair of ODAC
Player of the Week awards in her first season at SBC. She
went a perfect 16-0 at No. 1 singles during the spring season,
posting a 9-0 mark in league play. She went a combined 13-3
in doubles action, recording a 7-2 mark in conference action.
She was 11-3 at No. 1 doubles and 2-0 at No. 2 doubles, mostly with
teammate Moriah Burke as her partner. In the latest Atlantic
South Region rankings by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association
(ITA), Taylor is slotted eighth on the singles list. She and
Burke are 12th in the region’s doubles
rankings.
Ishida, in his fourth season at W&L, has led the Generals to
conference titles in each of his coaching campaigns, including the
program’s ninth straight and 21st overall ODAC
championship in 2011. Washington and Lee saw student-athletes
earn recognition at each of the singles and doubles ladder
positions on the All-ODAC First Team, having also received the
ODAC’s automatic bid into the NCAA Division III
Tournament. The Generals are currently rated second in the
Atlantic South Region and eighth nationally.
Budrus, a senior from Huntington, W.Va., also won the ODAC/Farm
Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete Award in 2010. In the
classroom, Budrus maintains a 3.88 grade point average as a
Mathematics major with a Spanish minor. She is a three-time
honoree on the All-ODAC Academic Team, having also been named an
ITA Scholar-Athlete in 2009 and 2010. She is a member of
three honor societies; Sigma Delta Pi, Omicron Delta Kappa and Phi
Beta Kappa. On the court, Budrus went 5-6 overall and 4-4 in
ODAC play. She was 4-6 at No. 2 singles and 1-0 at No. 1
singles. She and teammate Anne Ailstock posted an 11-4
overall doubles record including a 10-4 showing at No. 2 doubles
(1-0 at No. 1). The duo was 9-1 in ODAC play.
