Generals, Vixens Compete in NCAA Tennis

Yeatman Wins One Before Falling in Round of 16

CLAREMONT, Calif. --- Washington and Lee University women's tennis players Ellen Yeatman (pictured), Lauren Lukas and Trelsie Sadler were joined by Sweet Briar College's Ariel Taylor at the 2011 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Individual Tournament on Friday.  Yeatman and Taylor competed in the singles competition, while Lukas and Sadler teamed in the doubles bracket.

In the round of 32 singles competition, Yeatman defeated Massachusetts Institute of Technology first-year Lauren Quisenberry, 7-5, 7-6.  She then went on to face Chicago's Kendra Higgins in the round of 16, where she fell, 6-0, 6-0.  Yeatman concluded her junior campaign with a 7-11 overall record while being ranked sixth in the Atlantic South region. Earlier this season, she earned First Team All-ODAC honors in both singles and doubles en route to helping the Generals capture their 21stconference title.

In the doubles Round of 16, Lukas and Sadler fell to Amherst first-years Jordan Brewer and Gabby Devlin, 6-3, 6-2.  Lukas and Sadler finish their doubles season ranked third in the Atlantic South region with an overall record of 16-12. The duo earned first team all-conference honors in doubles this spring after collecting All-America honors in the fall when they won the championship doubles flight at the ITA Southeast Region Championships. After claiming the regional title, Lukas and Sadler traveled to the ITA Small College Championships, where they finished sixth.

Taylor, a freshman for the Vixens' squad, dropped her singles match to Amherst's Brewer, 6-0, 6-3.  The 2011 ODAC Player of the Year, Taylor won a pair of ODAC Player of the Week awards in her first season at SBC.  She went a perfect 16-0 at No. 1 singles during the spring season, posting a 9-0 mark in league play.  In the latest Atlantic South Region rankings by the ITA, Taylor is slotted eighth.
