FREDERICKSBURG, Va. --- The 15th-ranked Washington and Lee women's tennis team defeated Franciscan, 5-0, on Friday afternoon in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at the Mary Washington Outdoor Courts.
W&L dropped just three games en route to claiming a 3-0 lead heading into singles action. Sophomore Lily Horsley(Richmond, Va. / St. Catherine's School) posted a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles and then junior Mary Hampton McNeal(Beaufort, S.C. / South Carolina Connections Academy) closed out the match with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 6 singles.
The Blue and White improved to 19-7 overall with the victory, while Franciscan's season came to a close at 12-7.
W&L advances to Saturday's second round, where it will face host Mary Washington at 2:00 pm.
