R-MC Upends Stevenson to Advance in NCAA Volleyball Tournament

GALLOWAY, N.J. --- Senior Courtney Lowers (Crozet, Va. / Western Albemarle) recorded 21 kills as the Randolph-Macon women's volleyball team defeated Stevenson 3-1 Friday afternoon in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in the Galloway Regional on the campus of Stockton University.

The Yellow Jackets (26-7) dropped the first set 25-22 before winning the next three sets 25-23, 25-19, 25-12 to claim the victory and advance to the semifinal round of the regional.

The Yellow Jackets held an early 7-2 lead in the first set before the Mustangs (28-8) tied the score at 13-13. Stevenson gained the advantage and took the set, 25-23.

R-MC faced an early 5-2 deficit in the second set but tied the score at 6-6 and gained the lead with a 5-1 spurt. The Mustangs fought back to pull within two points at 13-11 before the Yellow Jackets expanded their lead to five points at 20-15. Stevenson tied the score at 20-all but R-MC regained the advantage and tied the match at 1-1 with a 25-23 win.

The score was tied at 8-8 in the third set before the Yellow Jackets used a short 3-0 spurt to grab the lead. R-MC expanded its lead to five points at 15-10. Stevenson came within two points at 16-14. The Yellow Jackets used a 9-5 run to claim the 25-19 win and hold a 2-1 advantage in the match.

The Yellow Jackets turned up the pressure in the fourth set with a 7-1 run. R-MC held a 16-8 advantage which expanded to nine points at 19-10. The Yellow Jackets claimed the fourth set with a 6-2 run to advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Senior Katie Rossberg (Crozet, Va. / Western Albemarle) registered 12 kills for R-MC.

Sophomore Erin Quinn (Morrisville, N.C. / Cardinal Gibbons) tallied 20 assists and senior Riley Martin(Crozet, Va. / Western Albemarle) added 15 assists.

Sophomore Samantha Sallade (Newport News, Va. / Peninsula Catholic) paced R-MC with 28 digs.

R-MC registered 30 blocks in the match. The Yellow Jackets were led by senior Addie Cooper (Virginia Beach, Va. / Cape Henry Collegiate) with eight assisted blocks and sophomore Colleen Beaver(Fredericksburg, Va. / Massaponax) with six assisted blocks and two solo blocks.

Randolph-Macon advances to the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 14 at 2:30 p.m on the campus of Stockton University. The Yellow Jackets will face the winner of Friday's 3 p.m. match: Christopher Newport/Hunter.
