GALLOWAY, N.J. --- Senior Courtney Lowers (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond River) recorded 25 kills and 25 digs as the Randolph-Macon volleyball team edged fifth-ranked Christopher Newport 3-2 Saturday afternoon in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Lowers now holds the R-MC record for career kills with 1,438, which sits 10th in ODAC history.
The Yellow Jackets (27-7) advance to the Sweet Sixteen to face host Stockton on Sunday, Nov. 15 at 2 p.m.
The Captains (30-3) took the opening game 25-21 before R-MC won 25-18 and 25-22 to take the lead. CNU posted a 25-20 victory in Game 4 before the Yellow Jackets pulled out a 15-13 win in Game 5.
Game 1 was close early. The score was tied 8-8 before the Captains scored six straight to take a 14-8 advantage. R-MC trailed 22-14 before scoring seven straight to pull within one. CNU scored the final three points to take the opener 25-21.
CNU jumped to an early 12-6 lead in Game 2 before R-MC used a 10-1 run to take a 16-13 advantage. The Captains scored three straight to level the game at 16-16. The Yellow Jackets scored nine of the final 11 points to close out the second game with a 25-18 victory.
R-MC dominated early in Game 3, building a 13-5 lead. CNU fought back and got within one at 22-21. The Yellow Jackets scored three of the final four points, as a Lowers kill sealed the game.
CNU took early control of Game 4, building a 14-8 lead and extending the advantage to eight at 17-9. R-MC pulled to within two at 22-20 before the Captains closed out the 25-20 decision.
The Captains had an early 4-2 lead before the Yellow Jackets scored four straight to take a 6-4 edge in Game 5. R-MC led 14-11 before CNU scored two straight to make it a one-point game. A Lowers kill ended the match and moved the Yellow Jackets to the Sweet Sixteen.
Senior Katie Rossberg (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) had 18 kills and 21 digs for the Yellow Jackets.
Sophomore Erin Quinn (Morrisville, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) registered 27 assists, while senior Riley Martin(Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) added 18 assists.
Sophomore Samantha Sallade (Newport News, Va./Peninsula Catholic) led all players with 26 digs. Sallade broke the R-MC record for digs in a season. She currently has 586 digs in 2015.
