Hampden-Sydney Staves Off Shenandoah Run for First Round Win

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. --- Hampden-Sydney College staved off a late run by Shenandoah University on the way to a 75-64 victory in the first round of the ODAC Men's Basketball Tournament on Monday evening. The win pits the eighth-seeded Tigers against #1 Guilford College on Thursday afternoon in the Salem Civic Center in the ODAC quarterfinals. Tip is set for 1:00 p.m. ET.

Hampden-Sydney (11-15) led 41-26 at the half and maintained a double figure lead throughout much of the first 10 minutes of second despite Shenandoah (9-17) progressively inching closer. Down eight with 10:55 to play, the Hornets turned up their pressure to pull within four at 61-57 with 5:31 to go.

Malcolm Clark brought SU as close at it would come with two free throws followed by a layup for a 65-63 score in HSC's favor. Jake Duncan gave the Tigers some breathing room, drilling a jumper before canning a pair from the line for a 69-63 advantage with 1:05 to go.

Free throws down the stretch pushed the Tigers further ahead thru the final whistle, setting up a quarterfinal date in Salem with Guilford.

JaVonte Reddick led four Tigers in double figures with 20 points to go with a game-best seven rebounds. Duncan finished with 14 tallies, Gui Guimaraes chipped in 13 off the bench. Justin Reid added 10 more points.

Clark led SU and all scorers with 26 points, while Kwa McDonald chipped in 18 points. Jonah Meredith came off the bench for 11 points, hitting all four field goals and each of his three free throws.
