Roanoke Downs Randolph in ODAC Men's Basketball First Round

SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke College picked up its first ODAC Men's Basketball Tournament victory in four years on Monday evening, defeating Randolph College, 85-68, in the first round at the Cregger Center.

Only one point separated the two teams in the first half, with Roanoke (15-10) owning a 37-36 advantage at the break. Both squads made 13 field goals and shot less than 45-percent from the field, but each team had adjustments to make for the second 20 minutes. Randolph (7-19) took control of the boards in the opening frame (22-12), powered by 11 rebounds from Ryan Fields, but nine turnovers curtailed any benefit from dominating the glass.

There was still little difference on the scoreboard in the early minutes of the second frame. Roanoke twice moved out to leads of four points, but it wasn't until John Caldwell nailed the second of two straight three-pointers with 12:33 to play that Roanoke commanded more than a two-possession lead at 55-48.

The Maroons advantage crew to 13 points at the 10:47 mark when Caldwell completed his 4-of-9 showing from downtown with two more makes from beyond the arc -- a stretch of four three-pointers in five Roanoke possessions.

Randolph got as close at 68-62 with 5:51 to go following a layout by Reid Jacoby, but a layup by Josh Freund with 3:25 to go put Roanoke up 10 at 74-64, marking the Maroons' return to a double digit advantage that persisted thru the final whistle.

Caldwell led four Maroons in double figures with 20 points. C.J. Miles added 19 points and seven assists and he hit three shots from beyond the arc. Joey Miller came off the bench for 13 points, while Freund finiished with 10 markers and a team-high nine rebounds.

Jacoby led Randolph and all scorers with 28 points as he canned five three-pointers to go with seven assists. Fields finished with 11 points and a game-best 14 rebounds.

Roanoke moves on to face third-seeded Emory & Henry College in the quarterfinals of the men's basketball tournament. Game time is set for 8:00 p.m. ET on Thursday at the Salem Civic Center.
