Newman's OT Goal Returns R-MC to ODAC Title Game

WINCHESTER, Va. --- Senior Olivia Newman scored less than six minutes into overtime as the third-seeded Randolph-Macon field hockey team edged second-seeded Shenandoah, 3-2, Wednesday in the semifinals of the ODAC Championships.

The Yellow Jackets (12-9) earned a spot in the title game for the fourth consecutive season. R-MC is scheduled to play the ODAC championship game at top-seeded Lynchburg on Saturday, Nov. 9. The Hornets rallied from a 1-0 halftime deficit to defeat No. 4 Bridgewater 3-1 in the other ODAC semifinal contest.

Newman scored on an assist by junior Carrie Jacobs at 75:37 to give R-MC the victory. The Yellow Jackets lost 4-1 to the Hornets (10-10) in Winchester a week ago in the regular-season finale.

The Yellow Jackets never trailed in the match. Junior Catherine Pricone scored in the 20th minute on an assist by junior Rachael Gardner as R-MC took the early lead. It was the team-leading 16th goal for Pricone. The Hornets answered less than a minute later before Gardner notched her fifth goal of the season in the 29th minute on an assist by senior Jenna Marlette as the Yellow Jackets took a 2-1 lead at halftime.

Shenandoah registered the equalizer in the 44th minute to force overtime.

Both teams had 21 shots, including 14 shots on goal. Gardner paced the Yellow Jackets with six total shots, with four on goal.

Senior goalkeeper Steph Talley went the distance for R-MC and recorded 12 saves.
