Waxter Lifts W&L Field Hockey to 3-0 Win Over Roanoke

LEXINGTON, Va. --- Senior forward Maggie Waxter (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park Country School) set the Washington and Lee field hockey single-season points record, as the third-seeded Generals defeated sixth-seeded Roanoke, 3-0, on Tuesday in the quarterfinals of the ODAC Tournament at the W&L Turf Field.

Waxter set the record by registering W&L's (12-6) first goal. In the 19th minute, Waxter (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park Country School) collected the ball off a deflected pass in front of the goal, and stuffed it into the back of the cage for her 17th tally of the year.

Waxter added another point on the Blue and White's second goal. Senior defender Noelani Schulmeyer (Glen Arm, Md./St. Paul's School) sent a pass across the front of the cage, and Waxter tipped the pass to the far side. Junior forward Maggie Sands (Glen Arm, Md./Notre Dame Prep) was waiting on the far post, and redirected the ball into the cage to give W&L a 2-0 advantage with 28:29 left in the second half.

With the goal and the assist, Waxter now has 41 points this season, which broke the record of 38 held by Jane Beall '06 and Kelly Taffe '04. The 17 goals by Waxter are also tied for the second most in a single-season in program history. Sallie Armstrong '10 had 17 goals in 2008 and 2009. Taffe holds the single-season mark with 19 goals in 2003.

The Generals tacked on one more insurance goal 16 seconds after Sands' goal. Sophomore forward Haley Tucker (Manakin-Sabot, Va./St. Catherine's School) sent a pass into the circle, and senior forward Camilla Davis (Richmond, Va./Maggie Walker Governor's School) deflected the pass just inside the near post to reach the final margin, 3-1.

Sophomore goalkeeper Ariyel Yavalar (Baltimore, Md./Garrison Forest School) stopped four shots to earn her fourth shutout of the season. Sophomore keeper Heather Schauder made 11 saves in 70 minutes, but allowed the three goals. W&L held a 19-7 advantage in shots and an 8-3 edge in penalty corners.

The Generals will take on second-seeded Bridgewater on Friday at Lynchburg at 7:30 pm in the ODAC Semifinals.
