Washington and Lee to Meet Shenandoah for ODAC Field Hockey Crown

LYNCHBURG, Va. --- Senior forward Maggie Waxter (Baltimore, Md. / Roland Park Country School) scored a pair of second-half goals to lead the third-seeded Washington and Lee field hockey team to a 2-1 victory over second-seeded Bridgewater in the ODAC Tournament Semifinals on Friday evening at Lynchburg College.

The win avenged a 3-2 loss to the Eagles suffered just last Saturday.  The two goals scored by Waxter moved her into a tie for first-place on the Generals' single-season goals list with Kelly Taffe '04.  She now has 19 goals and a W&L-record 45 points this season.

Both teams spent the early action in the midfield feeling each other out, but the Generals (13-6) had several chances inside the circle that simply misfired.  However, it was the Eagles (11-7) that claimed the early advantage when sophomore forward Tessa Tierson took a pass from first-year midfielder Emily Matisons with just 2:11 left in the first half and slipped a shot past W&L sophomore goalkeeper Ariyel Yavalar (Baltimore, Md. / Garrison Forest School).

The Generals turned up the pressure following the intermission and controlled play for much of the second half.  The Blue & White possessed the ball in the offensive end of the field almost exclusively in the opening minutes of the second stanza and it paid off with a goal off of a penalty corner at the 39:06 mark that evened the game at 1-1.

Senior defender Noelani Schulmeyer (Glen Arm, Md. / St. Paul's School) sent the ball to the top of the circle, where sophomore midfielder Haley Tucker (Manakin-Sabot, Va. / St. Catherine's School) passed it to Waxter, who connected in front of the goal for the equalizer.

The Generals kept pressing after drawing even and had several great scoring chances that were either turned aside or were sent just wide.  However, after receiving another penalty corner, Tucker and Waxter hooked up again for the game-winner at 59:22.  Schulmeyer hit Tucker, who blasted a shot from the top of the circle that was blocked.  However, the ball found Waxter, who pivoted and shot in one motion from in front of the goal for her record-tying tally.

The W&L defense made the lead stand up by holding the Eagles without a shot for the final 10:38 of the contest.  The Generals held a 14-7 advantage in shots and an 8-3 margin in penalty corners for the game.  W&L outshot the Eagles 11-1 in the second half when it also held an 8-3 edge in corners.

Yavalar made four saves in 70 minutes of action in the cage, while first-year goalkeeper Ali Bishop posted five saves while playing the duration in goal for Bridgewater.

Washington and Lee will take on fourth-seeded Shenandoah in Saturday's ODAC Championship game held at Lynchburg College at 6:30 pm.  The Generals defeated the Hornets in the regular-season meeting by a score of 9-0 on September 24.
