Lynchburg, Bridgewater Capture ODAC Outdoor Track Titles

BRIDGEWATER, Va. --- It had been a while for one school and a return to the winner's circle after a brief hiatus for the other as the trophies were handed out following the 2018 ODAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday evening. Lynchburg College locked up its ninth overall women's team title, its first league crown since 2011. Weekend host Bridgewater College lifted its 10th men's piece of hardware marking the third time in the last four years that the Eagles men have posed for the event's final photo.

For the first time in league history, awards for outdoor athlete of the meet were split between track and field competitors. Bridgewater swept both women's honors with Amber Celen taking home track athlete of the meet laurels, while Courtney Adams secured top field athlete accolades. Celen also doubled as the ODAC/Virginia Farm Bureau Insurancde Scholar-Athlete of the Year. There was a tie for men's track athlete of the meet with Eastern Mennonite University hurdler/sprinter Connor Faint and Washington and Lee University runner MacKenzye Leroy sharing the honor. Generals throw Dash Dericks took home men's field athlete of the meet recognition. Teammate Hank Patrick was tabbled the men's ODAC/Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

A pair of first-year sprinters claimed ODAC Rookie of the Year distinction. Roanoke College speedster Quinn Harlan earned the women's honor, while Lynchburg pacesetter Azavier Kirtley secured the men's award. ODAC Coach of the Year plaques went to the event's victorious mentors, LC's Jim Sprecher and BC's Brian Flynn.

Despite some outstanding finishes and strong performances, just three records were set or matched. Roanoke jumper Mara Briggs matched the high jump championship record set by former Maroon in 1998.

The remaining two standards were altered on the men's side and both on day one like Briggs. EMU's Faint sped to a new championship record in the preliminaries of the 400-meter hurdles, eclipsing the record shared by him and former LC standout Rachad Davis with a time of 53.65 seconds. Bridgewater's Jamie Hiegel set a new championship record in the longest race of the weekend, the 10,000-meter run. He finished the more than six-mile discipline in 31:44.88, eclipsing former LC runner Andrew Osborne's 2016 record of 31.49.56.
