Spiers Tosses Four-Hit Shutout as R-MC Blanks VWC

LYNCHBURG, Va. --- Freshman Rick Spiers pitched his first collegiate complete game, a four-hit shutout, as third-seeded Randolph-Macon blanked second-seeded Virginia Wesleyan 5-0 Friday evening at the 2015 ODAC Baseball Tournament at City Stadium.

The 19th-ranked Yellow Jackets (24-7) will face top-seeded Shenandoah tonight at 8:30 p.m. in the finals of the winner's bracket.

Spiers (7-2), the ODAC Rookie of the Year, walked two and struck out five. He threw 119 pitched and recorded the first complete game for the R-MC staff.

The Yellow Jackets started the scoring in the top of the second. Sophomore Stuart Brown  had a leadoff double to right center, was sacrificed to third by junior Michael Trentham and scored on a two-out single by sophomore Blake Saathoff to give R-MC a 1-0 lead over the Marlins (16-12).

R-MC added to its lead in the third. Senior Nate Meiners had a leadoff single and stole second. With one away, freshman Cole Migliorini crushed a long homer to right center as the Yellow Jackets increased their lead to 3-0.

The Yellow Jackets added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the ninth. Junior Michael Kroll had a leadoff double and was replaced by pinch-runner Devin Strickler. Saathoff had a single to moved Strickler to third. Strickler scored on a wild pitch and Saathoff came in on a base hit by sophomore Jordan Schmeer to make it 5-0.

Meiners, Migliorini, Brown and Saathoff each had two hits for R-MC.
