VWC's Cox Earns Medalist Honors

NELLYSFORD, Va. --- Washington and Lee University hoisted its 13th overall ODAC Men's Golf Championship trophy on Tuesday afternoon, out-pacing second-place Guilford College by 12 strokes with a three round 911. Generals trailed by seven strokes following an opening round 305, but more than made up for it with scores of 302 and 305 over the final 36 holes at Stoney Creek Golf Course at Wintergreen Resort in Nellysford, Va.

Virginia Wesleyan College sophomore Evan Cox made good on his billing as the ODAC Golfer of the Year, earning a share of the lead in round one and then running away with a nine-stroke victory.  He finished at even-par 216, the only player in the tournament not over par.  He surrounded a second-round 74 with a pair of 71's on his way to becoming the first Marlin to win gold at the ODAC tournament.

Tournament Results

Unlike last season's rain-soaked affair that forced the conference to shorten the event to 36 holes, the weather cooperated with the players at Stoney Creek.  Washington and Lee made the most of the favorable conditions with three players in the top-11.  Luke Farley, who registered a pair of eagles from the fairway in round one, finished as the events runner-up at 9-over 225 (72-76-77). Todd Alan McDonald tied for third at 228 (79-71-78), and Conley Hurst finished 11th at 232 (75-82-75).  Both George May and Andrew Barth posted 234 totals to tie for 16th, carding rounds of 80-79-75 and 78-76-80, respectively.

Guilford had an up-and-down tournament, following a tournament-best 297 in after 18 holes with a 317 in round two.  The Quakers righted the ship with a 309 to close the event at finish at 923. Tommy Schick (72-80-77) and first-round co-leader Ty Palmer (71-78-80) tied for fifth at 229, while Justin Perdue (76-80-75) was one of three players tied for eighth (with Bridgewater College's Dylan Burger and Randolph-Macon College's Trey Razzetti) at 231.

Virginia Wesleyan and Hampden-Sydney College finished close for third with the Marlins grabbing bronze by one stroke at 925 for the program's best finish in the conference tournament.

Selections for the NCAA Division III National Championship are slated for the evening of Monday, May 2.  Washington and Lee earns an automatic bid into the field that will compete at Midvale Country Club and Mendon Golf Club in Rochester, N.Y., on May 10-13.  Go to www.ncaa.com that evening to see if other ODAC teams or individuals join the Quakers in Greensboro.
