Lynchburg's Alfaro Shines on Day 1 of ODAC Track Championships

Bridgewater Men, Roanoke Women Own Slim Leads in Team Standings

BRIDGEWATER, Va. --- Lynchburg College thrower Kim Alfaro won two events on the first day of the ODAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Bridgewater College, proving to be the lone multiple-event champion among 12 finals events competed on Friday.  Conference teams competed in 20 events overall despite threatening weather much of the day.  Competition will continue on Saturday at Jopson Field.

Bridgewater owns a six-point advantage (58-52) over Lynchburg in the men's team standings, while just eight points separate the top-three in the women's ranks.  Roanoke College (39) is one point clear of BC (38), while LC sits third (31).

Alfaro stood atop the ODAC podium after competing in both the hammer throw and shot put.  She opened with a repeat title in the shot put, heaving the apparatus 11.95 meters (39' 2.5") to repeat as conference champion.  She then whipped the hammer 48.10 meters (157' 10.0"), setting a new facility record in the process.

Roanoke pulled a sweep in the 3,000-meter steeplechase as Caity Ashley and Harrison Toney matched their championshp efforts from 2014.  Ashley, last season's ODAC Rookie of the Year, stopped the watches in 11:38.84.  Toney chimed in at 9:32.56.

Bridgewater posted a trio of men's wins, topping the competition in the high jump, shot put and 10,000-meter run.  Pete Monteleone eclipsed 1.94 meters (6' 4.5") in the high jump, while Don Mills chucked the shot 14.54 meters (47' 8.5").  Former two-time Athlete of the Meet, Luke Sohl, repeated as the 10K champion, establishing a new Jopson Field standard at 32:47.83.

The remaining men's event title went to W&L's Patrick Robertson.  He spun his way to the top of the hammer charts, flinging the apparatus 47.21 meters (154' 11.0").

Eastern Mennonite University rookie Kat Lehman and Shenandoah University multi-athlete Jaclyn Mohlmann staked claim to the remaining women's victories.  Lehman posted a time of 39:01.45 to capture the 10K crown.  Mohlmann cleared 1.59 meters (5' 2.5") in the high to secure first place points on jumps over Bridgewater's Courtney Adams.

Several preliminaries were also competed in sprint and hurdle events, setting up a strong stable of finals for Saturday.  Heat sheets for those events can be found HERE.  Saturday's session is slated to begin at 10:00 a.m.  Live streams of select events can be accessed via the Bridgewater championship website or ODACLive.com.
