Emory & Henry Tops R-MC, 93-81, to Advance to Semifinals

SALEM, Va. --- The seventh-seeded Emory & Henry College Women’s Basketball Team (15-12) advanced to the semifinals of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament for the first time since 2005 with a 93-81 win over #2 Randolph-Macon College (20-5) Friday evening at Salem Civic Center.

It was most points scored by an E&H team in the conference tournament since 1989 when the Wasps put up 106 against Mary Baldwin College in the quarterfinal round.

The two teams went back and forth early in the contest with Randolph-Macon earning a 9-8 advantage with 15:13 on the clock. E&H then went on an 18-0 run over the next 5:44 to lead 26-9. The Yellow Jackets drew the margin back to three points with a 20-6 scoring spurt of their own but the Wasps pushed back to lead 45-37 at the intermission.

After the break, R-MC trimmed the E&H advantage all the way to a 53-all tie with 14:09 to play. The Wasps jumped back ahead with 10 straight points and would lead the rest of the contest. Emory & Henry went 14-for-18 (77.8%) from the free throw line in the final 6:41 of the contest to slowly pull away. The Wasps led by as much as 16 points (88-72) down the stretch and held off a spurt by the Yellow Jackets for the final 93-81 score.

Emory & Henry was paced by freshman guard Chloe Harris, who earned ODAC Rookie of the Year laurels on Thursday night, with a career-high 17 points. Junior forward Tamara Brewster put up 17 point and nine rebounds while senior guard Kristie Langley had 15 points and tied her career high with 13 assists.

The Wasps got 10 points off the bench from both junior center Amanda Stanley and sophomore guard Asja Jenkins, while junior guard Anna Green had seven points and six assists.

E&H shot 51.6 percent (33-for-64) for the game including a 14-for-25 (56.0%) clip in the second half. The Wasps held a 50-41 advantage on the boards which resulted in 16 second-chance points. Emory & Henry had 18 assists on 33 made baskets as well.

Randolph-Macon’s Hannah Livermon led all players with 24 points, hitting five three-pointers while Sarah Parsons put up 18 points and four rebounds. Khajae Hester chipped in 15 points, three rebounds, five assists and two steals while Amber Lee had 11 points and nine boards off the bench.

As a team, the Yellow Jackets shot just 37.0 percent (27-for-73) for the game but scored 16 points off 14 E&H turnovers. Randolph-Macon went 21-for-31 (67.7%) from the charity stripe.

Emory & Henry advances to face the winner of #3 Lynchburg College and #6 Washington and Lee University in the ODAC Tournament Semifinals on Saturday. Tipoff for that contest will be at 8:00 p.m.
