Guilford Tops Shenandoah, 16-11, in ODAC Women's Lacrosse Semifinals

WINCHESTER, Va. –-- E'leyna Garcia scored all of her game-high five goals in the second half of Guilford College's 16-11 win at Shenandoah University in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Lacrosse Tournament semifinal Saturday. Guilford scored 10 of the game's final 11 goals to erase a 10-6 second-half deficit.

The Quakers' rally lifted them into next Saturday's (5/3) ODAC Tournament final at top-seeded Washington and Lee University, a 16-15 winner over fifth-seeded Randolph-Macon College in Saturday's other semifinal. The nationally ranked Generals are the tourney's four-time defending champions, while Guilford (12-6) is making its first ODAC Tournament final appearance.

Guilford, the tourney's third seed, fell behind the second-seeded Hornets, 7-2, in the first half. The Quakers closed the period on a 4-2 run to make it a 9-6 Shenandoah lead at the break. The Hornets' Samantha Sisson scored each of her team-high five goals and one of her two assists in the first half.

The Hornets' Liz Bereit opened the second-half scoring seven minutes into the frame, which gave the hosts a 10-6 edge. Guilford answered with 10 straight scores, including each of Garcia's tallies. She started the decisive spurt with an unassisted goal at the 21:58 mark, which set the NCAA Division III record for consecutive games with at least one goal. Garcia, who has scored in each of her 70 career contests, surpassed the previous mark of 69 set by Franklin & Marshall College's Jen Pritchard in 2009.

Garcia ripped off two more scores and Eleanora Keene tallied at the 19:20 mark to tie the game for the first time since the first half. Demming Carlow put the visitors ahead with 14:37 to play off the second of three Lily Colley assists. Colley added the game-winning goal, her fourth of five markers in the match, with 11:26 remaining in regulation. Garcia's fifth and final score capped the 10-0 run before Bereit scored the game's final goal with 13 seconds remaining.

The Quakers held a 30-24 edge in shots, including a 19-8 second-half margin. Guilford also won nine-of-12 second-half draw controls after the Hornets picked up 10 of the 15 first-half draws. Colley's eight points led all scorers and boosted her NCAA Division III-leading point total to 129 on 70 goals and a school-record 59 assists. Garcia's five goals move her to within one of Gina Valles' (Roanoke) ODAC career record of 288. Keene finished with two goals and one assist, plus a team-high four draw controls. Marina Bailey also scored twice. Sammi Milbourn made three saves in goal.

Sisson's seven points paced the Hornets, who were outscored, 10-2, in the second half. Bereit finished with four goals and a game-best six draw controls. Ashley Cross made 12 saves in goal.
