WINCHESTER, Va. --- Sixth-seeded Virginia Wesleyan registered an 11-8 win over third-seeded Shenandoah University in a quarterfinal game of the 2015 ODAC Women's Lacrosse Tournament.
One week after setting a Virginia Wesleyan College rookie record with 12 draw control wins against Shenandoah University's Hornets, Megan Schallock did it again...and against the same team.
Virginia Wesleyan dropped a heart-breaking 17-16 overtime decision to Shenandoah in that first meeting, but reversed matters in a second meeting on Saturday as the Marlins took control early and posted an 11-8 victory in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) tournament quarterfinal contest. The win moves VWC into a semifinal game on Wednesday, April 29, in Ashland against the Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon College at a time to be announced.
Schallock was once again a catalyst for sixth-seeded Virginia Wesleyan (10-8) with her ability to win the crucial draw controls to give the Marlins possession of the ball. She matched her rookie record with 12 more wins, increasing her season total to 101, marking her as the first player in VWC women's lacrosse history to surpass 100 in a season.
Schallock also led all scoring with six goals, increasing her season total to 70. Her total ties the second highest single-season number in VWC history, set in 2002 by Meagan DiCave, now the Marlins' head coach.
Five Marlins scored goals overall, beginning with junior Tiana Garland and senior Brooke Cabeceiras. They tallied Virginia Wesleyan's first two goals of the game, helping the Marlins to control the pace against the third-seeded Hornets. Cortney Gensemer scored Shenandoah's first two goals to help keep the Hornets even with the Marlins, but another Cabeceiras goal put the Marlins in front at 3-2 and in the lead for good.
Cabeceiras' second goals was the first of five straight by the Marlins, who pushed out to a 7-2 lead with 5:54 remaining in the first half. VWC led 8-4 at halftime.
Virginia Wesleyan increased its lead to 10-4 by scoring the first two goals of the second half, both from Schallock. She finished with three goals in the half. Shenandoah closed the spread by scoring three goals in the final 5:04 of the contest.
Senior Amari Agee emerged among the defensive leaders for the Marlins, recording four caused turnovers. She increased her season total to 36 and her career total to 116, the third highest in VWC history.
Junior Madison Carroll recorded 14 saves for the Marlins. Rachel Levy recorded 15 saves for SU.
